I have four boxes and a golf ball in each one. Big Momma just started to lay this week and she has used two of the boxes so far. The others, younger than her by a couple of months, use the boxes to "play" in. So every now and then I have to put hay back in the boxes. I have not had a problem with them wanting to play golf with the balls. Hope all works out for you.

I have ten boxes and seven golf balls the girls keep moving them from box to box but haven't had one thrown out in over a year. I just leave them in there because it seems like I'm always adding new girls and its easier to keep track of them in the boxes.

no problem. Everyone is now laying but the balls are still in the boxes.

i couldn't find wooden eggs this time of year, so i'm just using round wooden balls about the size of the large end of the eggs... plain wood, i'm debating painting them white(ish)... if only for ease of cleaning if/when necessary. thoughts on that?

and as for broody, i don't mind missing an egg here and there, i have eggs in the 'bator and would like momma to take them when they hatch, if possible. 8) so i'll let her brood the balls. (took 11 eggs away from her today and replaced the balls)

I blew the contents out of a regular egg and filled it back up with plaster of Paris. Works well and you can pick your color or even use their own eggs.

how did you get the plaster back in there? i understand about blowing eggs tho, did that a ton for craft stuff when i was a kid

I don't think there is any toxicity problem and refilling was accomplished with a syringe, you can use a large one like they use to inject marinade into meat or use an oral medication syringe and just use multiple fills. I just put tape over the bottom hole then pit it in a carton, just a liitle leaked and was easily cleaned as they dried.
