Good & bad food for ducks

I do have access to grower pellets. I can start buying those.

He usually has a sock surface to walk on, just straw and grass and the back tiled porch. Every now and then I might see him around the side of the house on the pebbles with the dogs, might try and keep him away from there. His pond water is changed every second day as he gets it quite dirty.

How old is the drake? does he have access to foraging? Sounds like a lot of treats to me, my ducks eat a grower pellet mixed with whole corn and whole oats plus boss(so black oil sunflower seeds) and then the rest they find on their own, in winter i will offer some greens(they adore romaine lettuce) but otherwise not much else is given.

Do you have storey's guide to ducks? it has good info duck feeding in there.

I will have to have a read of it. I haven't yet. He is 2 years old. I might have to purchase a grower pellet mix for him.

You'd be better with a grower than a layer as Amiga said, he won't ever lay, i don't use layer here even though i have many ducks but i have just as many drakes so prefer to skip the layer and give oyster shell for ladies egg laying needs.

The book(Storey's) has good advice on milling through the many options.

Thank you for your advice. I originally had the layer because I had a girl duck aswell. But unfortunately she passed away so it is just him now. So I will give up the layer and get some grower pellets.

Ducks require more niacin than chickens. You can supply that by adding brewers yeast to his food. My ducks love it, I feed fermented feed so its easy to mix in. Brewers yeast has other nutritional advantages as well. All my poultry really like cat food (dry), the minute I let them out they head to the cat dish.

No, baker's yeast is a problem. Brewer's yeast is what can help with niacin. Brewer's yeast can be found where they sell vitamin supplements, most of the time.
