good books for teens

My 10 and 14 yr old DD have been reading the Warriors series of books (they are about cats and their clans); now the 14 DD is reading some kind of Anime (sp) series of books. Of course Twilight and HP are in there. If you can stand VC Andrews books he wrote many series. Tony Hillerman (author) is interesting (detective/mystery based with a lot of Native American history and culture). Ditto to the James Herriot books, love his stuff myself. Umm.... The Eragon books, Artemus Fowl series.......

I am a voracious reader myself and have a difficult time finding new things to read......

Life As We Knew It
by Susan Beth Pfeffer

It's almost the end of Miranda's sophomore year in high school, and her journal reflects the busy life of a typical teenager: conversations with friends, fights with mom, and fervent hopes for a driver's license. When Miranda first begins hearing the reports of a meteor on a collision course with the moon, it hardly seems worth a mention in her diary. But after the meteor hits, pushing the moon off its axis and causing worldwide earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, all the things Miranda used to take for granted begin to disappear. Food and gas shortages, along with extreme weather changes, come to her small Pennsylvania town; and Miranda's voice is by turns petulant, angry, and finally resigned, as her family is forced to make tough choices while they consider their increasingly limited options. Yet even as suspicious neighbors stockpile food in anticipation of a looming winter without heat or electricity, Miranda knows that that her future is still hers to decide even if life as she knew it is over.

Was going to suggest that one, is a great book. I presently live in the Ozarks of Missouri and that book always comes to mind. Also I would have to suggest The Chronicals of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. They seem kind of young but I am presently reading them again and read them when I was younger. They are just neat stories.

It may seem a little young for you, but Gary Paulsen's Harris and Me is a really funny farm-life book. Also Gary Paulsen's sled dog books are great as well. I will also agree that the James Herriot series is also wonderful.

As I think of more I'll post again. I was reading "adult" books when I was 10, so I have to really remember. My mom aided and abetted me with the adult books. Schmoozy romance novels by Jude Devereaux. Yuck!

thanks, i'll have to look for some of those.

so many books. well one is the giver trilogy. most people dont realize this but the book "gathering blue" is the sequel to the giver. the 3rd book is "the messenger " all by lowis lowry. i started reading this trilogy because the giver was my summer reading! read the giver in one day and loved it! so i went on to finish the trilogy. the book is about a seemingly perfect futuristic society where everything is provided for you and every day is scheduled out in advanced and carefully controlled. when jonas a 11 reaches his ceremony of 12 and is chosen as the new reciever of memory his whole world is turned upsidedown

Swordbird and Sword Quest by Nancy Yi Fan, a teenaged author
Adam of the Road by Elizabeth Janet Gray
The Great Turkey Walk by Kathleen Karr
The View From Saturday by E L Konigsburg

The Giver is a deep one for sure. I haven't read the next two yet.
The City of Ember, People of Sparks, and Diamond of Darkwood books are all good, if a bit light. Easy style, bigger issues.

I loved Things Unseen and its sequel.

Riverboy is awesome as well.

anything by Scott Westerfeld
Eragon (series) Christopher Paolini
