Welcome to BYC! My wife and I were both raised in Texas. Australorps are wonderful chickens (in my opinion, the best standard, dual-purpose breed on the planet). They are very hardy. I've raised Black Australorps where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (123 F once) and with shade, good ventilation in the coop, and plenty of fresh water, they did just fine). I've also raised them where temperatures dropped to 30 below zero F one winter and again, with a dry, draft free coop, they did fine. They are friendly, calm, and gentle birds (my children, and now my granddaughter, made pets of them) and they are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Until it was broken in 1979, a Black Australorp held the world's egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while mine have never reached that kind of production (and likely never will), I have had a few hens that have exceeded 300 eggs in a year. You won't go wrong with Australorps. Good luck in getting your Australorp flock.
