I'm moving out to Seguin soon and I wanted to know if anyone knew of some good breeds. I've done a little research and I like the sound of the Australorps.

Welcome to BYC! My wife and I were both raised in Texas. Australorps are wonderful chickens (in my opinion, the best standard, dual-purpose breed on the planet). They are very hardy. I've raised Black Australorps where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (123 F once) and with shade, good ventilation in the coop, and plenty of fresh water, they did just fine). I've also raised them where temperatures dropped to 30 below zero F one winter and again, with a dry, draft free coop, they did fine. They are friendly, calm, and gentle birds (my children, and now my granddaughter, made pets of them) and they are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Until it was broken in 1979, a Black Australorp held the world's egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while mine have never reached that kind of production (and likely never will), I have had a few hens that have exceeded 300 eggs in a year. You won't go wrong with Australorps. Good luck in getting your Australorp flock.

Thanks for the advice. It'll be a while before I get it started buy I'm trying to get a jump on it and be prepared when the time comes

Oh, Australorps area an excellent breed to keep! I just love my Aussies....very docile and friendly, very hardy and great layers too. You can stop by your state thread and chat with your chicken neighbors to see if anyone nearby has some for you...

I hope you can find some of these birds. Orps are the best breeds to keep as far as I am concerned. :-)
