Thought you might enjoy a story about a responsible dog owner/neighbor. Our coop/run is in our garden enclosed by a chain link fence. Last week, one of the girls ventured under the gate, and wandered onto the road between our houses. Our neighbors have a black lab that they walk off-leash all the time. Lovely dog, very friendly. They've done this for years, long before we had chickens, and we live out in farming country.

Well, the 2 'met' and now our girl is missing a few tail feathers, but other than that, none the worse. Our neighbors were able to control their dog, return our chicken, and alert us to the gap in the gate. Of course, they received some fresh eggs, and a big 'Thank you'. Oh, and we fixed the gap! I love a happy ending!

I'm glad everything turned out so well! It's always good to hear a happy ending!

That's nice to hear. Too often all we read is the tragic posts about dogs killing chickens.

I've twice had chickens wiggle under the fence into neighbor's yards.

Once the neighbor guarded the chicken till I got home from work.

The other neighbor kept his dog inside till I got home.

Both grew up around chickens, but were afraid to touch them. They were both kinda sheepish when I suggested that they just toss them back over the fence.

I have great neighbors. Course I've caught several of the neighbor's dogs when they got loose, and held them till they got home.

Maybe they weren't pros at catching the chickens? I don't know about you, but I suck at it, and I've been doing it for months. LOL. I'm thinking about buying a net.

Yesterday our dog, Tracker, got out when the chickens were having their run of the yard. Fortunately she had the tennis ball stuck in her mouth while she "herded" the chickens. It was a relief to know she didn't want to attack them as she is a very wound up German Shepherd with high-drive.

LOL My grandmothers dog once took a few tail feather of fromone of my hens... you should have seen the dog run when the rooster got mad!!

Since the neighbors moved in with their pitbull on the 40 acres next door, we've had much fewer predators hanging around the coop. My girls are cooped behind a double fence, and pastured behind horse fencing during the day,so I don't worry too much about dogs, but predators, yes. Dogs can be a good thing.
