Good grief my hens are loud today!

Not sure what's going on, but 2 of my 4 hens are being insanely loud this morning. Everything is fine--they have food and water--but my Wyandotte (who as far as I know isn't laying yet) started carrying on just a bit after sunrise, and one of the australorps is joining in now. My husband walked the dog earlier and said he could hear them all the way down the block.

I try to tell myself that they're no louder than barking dogs or the geese we regularly hear, but yowza! They have some strong opinions!

The Wyandotte has been squatting. Pretty sure she's not laying yet. She yells at everything though. The two australorps are both laying. One started at about Halloween and slowed down a little bit is month, but never stopped, and the other just started. I had to move the newest layer off her egg this morning. She seemed very offended!

Usually about a week or two after the initial squat, the maturing hens begin to settle and lay eggs. I'd keep an eye on her and see what she does! And yeah, through Winter they're notorious for slowing their egg production due to lack of daylight since the days are shorter. Glad they're laying though!

I bet they're getting ready to lay! Four of our five started laying about a week after they first started submitting. One of the five was about two weeks after first submitting.

And the fifth layer just started today! Both our RIRs were INSANELY loud as they got ready to lay. Each day before the day they laid the first egg, they squawked more and more. On the "day of" (for both of them) they whipped the others up into a full-on cacophony! Once they actually laid that first egg, then things calmed down.

They made such a ruckus this morning both of our barred rocks are hoarse now! Three layers were synchronized on their laying schedule and all wanted to be in the same nest box - even though there were three of them and four nest boxes! They hollered while the soon-to-be-laying one carried on as well... eventually two of them crammed themselves into one box...

I don't know if this will work, but hopefully it will. I think Instagram mutes by default, but be warned it's LOUD!

At least you get to enjoy more tasty eggs now! Congratulations!

I think she's singing it for others! She does crouch if I come up to them now, but no signs of eggs from her yet...

We love the egg song!! Thankfully the one that liked to sing it FOR others laying stopped that tomfoolery once she started laying! I think we might have gotten lucky :)
