Good laying characteristics?

I have read about trying to identify characteristics in certain hens in a laying flock and breeding the hens with the good characteristics and not breeding the ones with the bad. And simply a laying flock. Not a show flock. What characteristics should be identified to be bred into offspring and which ones should be bred out for maximum quality egg production?

Hatch eggs from the hens that lay the largest eggs and those who lay most frequently. If you continue to do that, eventually you'll have a bunch of super layers.

That's what many hatcheries have done with sex links and the Pearl White and CA leghorns that they sell.

Also, You keep the best looking roos from the best laying hens...
