You might want to run to your local pharmacy before going to the appointment (if it's not already too late). Ask them for a small tube of "L-M-X" it looks like this:
All you do is 20 minutes before little one gets stuck, put a generous amount directly on the skin (obviously in the general area that they'll get the needle stick) and try not to touch it or let little one touch it. This cream (in our house it's called "Magic Cream") will numb the area. They have large clear band-aid covers that will keep it protected from smears, but taking the band-aid off isn't much fun.
My DD always has to get bloodwork done, and we swear by it. It's worth the pain of messing with it! The only thing it probably isn't good for are finger pricks.
