Hi, everyone. I'm a new member and i am currently on my porch at 5:30 a.m. watching my chickens walk around in the dark. This has been going on since a little after 4 a.m. I thought sometging was wrong so i went out checking around in their coop and nope their just out early. So I'm just keeping an eye on them until the sun comes up.

Crazy, right?!?!
My roosters start crowing around 3am, I've heard them earlier than that too! I mean, REALLY? Dummies, at least most of mine stay in the coop until there's a bit of light.
Oh, welcome to BYC!!!

It's better for you and safer for them to be let out at a certain time YOU pick. I would wait for daylight - too many preds in the dark. If you let them out to free range early you probably can't tell if a pred is skulking around in trees or bushes.

If you are letting them out into a secure run - give it a thorough eyeballing first. Just in case it became insecure during the darkest hours
