Good Pets???

As a lot of folks have said already, I am also new to them. I incubated two of the eggs and hatched them both last Thursday, and I cannot BELIEVE how personable they are already. I am excited for them to grow up! And they are smart. They pick up on everything so fast (except for walking, lol). I will definitely hatch emus again. They're only a week old and I am in love with them already. :)

But I wouldn't consider them pets. Good livestock? Yeah, I suppose. But they have specific needs, and I think "pets" are more accustomed to people-things. *shrug*

Im sorry i have to disagree regarding the word "pets" I consider everything that gives some sort of emotionel feeling and that im not going to eat for pet. I mean Reptiles and Tarantulas for example. You can cuddle with them or even pick them up in some cases. But they are considered pets. Emus? Well you can cuddle with them if they are tame.

So im not sure why people are afraid of calling certain animals pets, just cause you are afraid of being stamped as a stereoypical person who dont know anything and think every pet is a cuddly fluffy bunny.

Nope if you can handle animals feel free to call them pets.

(Sorry for my outburst:p )

I was given three emu eggs a couple of months ago, And the first emu hatched yesterday. And I must say they are HUGE just hours old, I mean comparing to chicks, of course emus and their eggs are large too lol, But I was still amazed that he is 12 inches tall just 14 hours old! I intend to keep him as a pet's, and later on hopefully pair them up with mates later on. (aww snap, I called them "pet's lol). I'm very new to emus, but I must agree from what I've read that they wouldn't be the best "first time pet", Since it's way more complex then a goldfish lol. But Since I've had Ginnie fowl, turkeys, ducks, chickens, cats, and goats, and have been doing it for at least 11 years, I hoping that I may be experienced enough to handle now, emus. I just can't wait until he starts to mature and that his sibs hatch out alright.

P.S. I don't know why, but I've always seemed to see emus as livestock, not so much as pets, (even though I know they make fabulous pets,) But a lot of my pets ARE livestock lol.

Yeah its probably pretty subjective what you see as pets, i mean some people think cows goats (livestock) are nothing more than food with no souls. At my farm thats pretty much all we got and we consider them all as pets and we treat them just as we treat our dogs the animals you would consider as normal pets. Hell i even talk to my Tarantulas at times :p

If ya take it to the vet when it's sick . . . it's a pet.

18 years, Smokeyjoe? Really?

Could you write a report for us? There must be something for us to learn from the length of your observations.

I have loved every moment of my experience with my emu and will continue to have them for as long as possible , my emu have went to the vet before and she walked out of the horse trailer and walked into the vets office and sat down in the floor and waited for her turn , we did have people taking pictures even the vet said she had never seen a emu petted and she got pictures to show others , I felt flattered that she was impressed . my emu have got out of there enclosure before and when I get up or get home it will be waiting on the outside of the fence to go back in . and comes to me . they are by far my favorite pets I have ever had and I have had all types. I don't know everything but have learned a lot . they have taught me so much , and yes 18 years !

Wow, Smokeyjoe. I love love love the whole Wild Critters thing -- it's what made my project my project; but I still envy those who can pet the birds. In six years, I have hand-fed three birds, and stroked two.

I think it comes down to the 'trust bond' you form with your animals. When my breeder hens were chicks I just used to go down into their pen to sit and hang out with them. I always had a couple of handfuls of food nearby and they would come and take it right from my hand. And then I'd just handle them by petting their necks, speaking to them in a soft manner. Now they follow me around like puppies. Our meter reader came by last week and ask if I'd mind showing him around, so i did. What amazed him is the ability to 'pet' the birds. I don't have a problem entering a breeder run with either the males or females. I carry a dressage whip for that odd circumstance of a 7 foot tall (i have ostrich, not emu and mine don't have any reds in the lines so... that aggression just isn't there) rooster wheeling around ready to kick. It's only happened once, but once was enough to scare the dog snot out of me lol :)) And it didn't take cracking him to make him back down. They hate the whistle that whip makes when you smack the ground with it just like a horse does. Anyway, there isn't a bird on my property that can't be handled. It's a pretty cool feeling no doubt. I've never kept emus before but smokeyjoe, you've got a good thing going on there sir :)

I think they are the funniest , cutest most ridiculous critters I have ever owned! They play with all kinds of toys, they get into everything, my oldest one drags a small fleece baby blanket everywhere and puts it down where he wants to lay, should have named him linus, right now as I'm typing this the 2 of them are in the horse barn peeking in the window to the house because they can see me at the table, bobbing their little heads up and down and pecking the door knob. Man I love those guys!
