Good treats for baby chicks?

I know this is an older thread but I've just now got chicks!
I gave them some eggs (hard boiled in small pieces) and they pecked at it a little but didn't seem super excited. The real winner is a live cricket! Watching them chase it down and then chase the one who has it! So cute. And our smallest little chick oddly enough is the winner mostly ! Who knew?!

HI in Louisville!!! Hoptown here!!! Just got my first crop of chickies as well (1 week old today) and came to this thread looking for what to treat my FlufferButters (what I call my flock!

) I just put some grit down in their brooder and tossed in about 2Tbs of dried mealworms and seeds.

Gonna try and sift through this 40 page thread and hope I glean a bit more..... until then, time to boil up some eggs!

Hi!
Flufferbutters, that's cute. What kind of grit are you using? I've found chicken grit but it's certainly much to big for chicks. I've yet to find parakeet grit at any pet store and everyone else just "goes outside and gets some dirt" - which is much harder when everything here is clay!! Lol
Next move would be getting play sand from Home Depot or something I guess.

Jiffy, you can find parakeet or bird grit at most WalMart super stores. Regular dirt won't do it, but I read beach sand or sandbox sand works as well. If you have Amazon Prime, they have it there too. https://smile.amazon.com/Manna-Pro-...9&sr=8-1&keywords=Manna-Pro-146059-Chick-Grit

Hope this helps!

I've heard all over that you can feed your baby chicks hard-boiled egg. Mine are 4 days old. I was wondering: can I feed them the egg yolk too, or just the egg white? How about just the egg yolk? It has a different consistency and different nutrients, so I'm unsure. Any advice is helpful!

Also, do you need grit for hard-boiled egg? How about scrambled eggs?

My chicks get grit no matter what they eat. IMO, birds have a gizzard, and should have some grit in it to foster healthy digestion. You can simply give them a plug of sod from your yard (as long as your yard not treated with chemicals). Most sod will have a bit of grit. That sod will also give them some beneficial bacteria and fungi, greens, minerals, and first exposure to your soil pathogens, including cocci. (Don't panic. Cocci are natural flora in a chicken's gut. It's only when they get out of balance with the good guys that the chicken gets sick. By giving the soil early in the chick's life, you are working with the natural immune system that she was hatched with, and that lasts about 2 weeks.

Eggs: yolk, white are both fine. Hard boiled is fine, or you can simply scramble it without adding extra liquid.

Well I just read this entire thread, took a while! Lol! Some great ideas and tips in here. Today was the first treat for my week and a half old chicks! I took a pinch of their feed and mixed in a little kefir, blueberry flavored. I figured the probiotics would be good for them. I put it in a jar lid and sat it in their brooder..and they just kind of investigated it and walked away. So then my 2 year old daughter and I put some of it in our hands and offered it that way, and they devoured every last bit of it! I figured that would do the trick since they love being hand fed. But then one of the chicks kept going after a little mole on my arm HAHAHAHA she wouldn't stop!! She even tried pulling it off! Ouch! That's the first time the pecking ever hurt hahaha They are such curious, nosey little things :D
