Good treats for baby chicks?

0.jpg

I treat my (spoiled) baby silkies with mealworms, sunflower hearts and dendelion flowers as well as their feed of gamebird pellets. I thought the chicks would be scared of the flower, but nope, they quite literally hopped to it!

The chicks also get to spend some time outside when the weather is nice, I have been taking them out since they hatched pretty much, and they are awesome little predators. Earlier today one ran up to me all proud with a small slug in it's beak, seeking protection from it's envious siblings who wanted to steal it. XD

I do provide them grit now, but they also get grit from being outside.

I give my chicks a mix of 1:1 starter and plain active culture yogurt (like Nancy 'a) or butter milk every day for the first three days after they hatch. We Haven't had a case of pasty butt since I started doing this.

Then they only get chick feed while they are indoors and under lights because their already stinky poop gets stinkier when the get treats.

Once they go (3-4 weeks) they eat what they find plus fermented grain twice a day.

My cat had some spare wet food, and I didn't want to toss it, so I broke up the chunks and gave it to the chicks... They went absolutely insane over it! I first gave them a sample on a spoon to see how they took to it, and well, they tried eating the spoon after the food was gone.

So I put some in a little bowl for them.

I also gave a little to the adults, but while the rooster loves it, the hen doesn't seem interested in it, even with him food-chuckling his little heart out over how amazing the food he found was.

I have the same questions.  I didnt see grit in the feed shop and was embarrased to ask- do you just use sand or is there special 'chicken grit' products?  Is there an amount to give or do you just 'free feed' it and trust that they know how much to eat? My big girls are almost 3 weeks old and have not had any treats- I would love to give them some.  Would giving hard boiled eggs teach them to enjoy the taste of egg?  will they eventually ruin their eggs when they are laying because they like the taste?

thank you!

Most feed stores always have chick grit it has nutrients for baby chick and their digestive system. Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware etc etc. It's better than plain sand and other treats it best for the chicks to stay away from other treats till 6 weeks and then in moderation.

True grit is insoluble, so therefore has no nutrients that can be absorbed (as far as I know). But, I always give my chicks grit. It comes from my yard. I do purchase a supply of grit to have on hand for my adult flock during the October to April freeze up.
