Good Winter Layers

I second the red and black sex links. Ours laid all last winter-plenty of eggs for us and still some left over to sell. We did not use supplemental lighting either-just a heat lamp when really cold.

I third the sex links, they are laying machines. I live in western SD, and do not add lights or heat to my winter coop, and with two BO, who laid pretty well too, had enough eggs all winter, and gave eggs away.

However, my coop is small, so 5-8 birds could keep the building warm. It depends on the ratio of the size of the coop and the number of hens. Too small of coop, large number of chickens and you get pecking issues, too big of coop and small number of chickens and they do not produce enough heat to keep it warm.

Also remember, if you have severe winter temps, they need more feed during those cold snaps. A good diet will help a lot.
