Melancholy Bear
Chirping
We lost our pride and joy chick, Holly, a starlight green egger, last week. Not unlike most days, we let them out of the coop to free range for a few hours before sunset. However, instead of being around, this time we ran some errands. And she was gone when we returned. Our rooster seemed to be calling for her. There were no feathers, no remains, no sign of her. We beat ourselves up about it. Why did we let them out? Why did we leave?
She was 8 months old. We raised her from 2 or 3 days old. She was our only chicken who was always eager to hop up on our lap, or shoulder, or head. Her fuzzy butt, quirky personality, and waddling run always made us laugh. It almost seemed like she was trying to communicate by looking in your eyes. She is our first loss, and it hurts...deeply. It seems silly. How can one love a chicken so much? This is my tribute to her. RIP, Holly. We loved you.
