I got some 2 day old chicks on Sunday. Today I noticed one has goopy stuff on her eye and she having trouble opening it. Like human pink eye almost. I used a warm wet rag and gently wiped it clean. Is there anything I can put on it? Like an ointment or anything?

One of my Silkie chicks got gunky eye on it's second day too, with a light brown goopy stuff appearing on the eye that if left, would harden over the eye. I just kept cleaning the gunk off with a damp warm tissue and applied a little coconut oil to it, as other than the eye, the chick was completely healthy and active, and eventually it got better. Some people suggest treating it with sterile eye drops/natural tears eye drops, but the coconut oil was the most accessible for me.

If the chick is having breathing issues or isn't eating and drinking as it should, then it is likely more than an eye issue and will need to be separated and treated with antibiotics, as it could be a respiratory infection. One guy also suggested using 1/4 cc of Tylan 50 down the throat for 5 days.
