goopy eyed chick

I have a two day old chick that seems to have an eye infection of some sort. Her eye gets stuck shut and gets a hard crusty thing on it. I have been cleaning it with a warm, wet q-tip so she can open it but I'm wondering what it is, and how I can stop it from happening in the first place.

I had the same thing happen to me and I let nature take its course and it cleared up in two weeks on its own. Chick is doing fine.

That's good. I just feel bad for her because the other chicks peck at her eye. It's almost like pink eye or something, really goopy then crusty.
