I have a Silkie chick that hatched last weekend that over the last couple of days has developed a goopy eye. I have cleaned it off a couple times with a warm q-tip and it looks like a yellow discharge, no bubbles or anything like that. He just stands there and chirps a lot while shaking his head back and forth will drink water but I am not sure he is eating. I have four others and they are not showing any symptoms.

What should I do? I do not have any eye ointment (just visine) but I do have some anti-biotics I can mix with his water. Any suggestions?

Anytime I spy an illness, I would isolate first. That helps with making sure nothing is spreading and giving you the chance to see whether she's eating, drinking and pooping okay. Myself, I would probably try the eye ointment I have for my cats if it didn't clear up on its own within 2-3 days. But your options...??? Hopefully somebody else will respond... good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I do have him isolated from the other chicks now. He is actually resting quietly right now on top of his teddy bear. I have seen him drink water in his isolation chamber so I at least know that is happening.

I have a Buff Silkie who had an eye problem ever since she came to me in the mail, thus she has the name "Winkie", lol. For a few weeks, I did have to carefully wash around the eye and 'de-goop' it. Upon closer inspection, she had a tiny bit of her lower eyelid missing, either at birth or by an accident. Look very closely to see if you can see any malformations of the eyelid. Winkie is now over a year old and has a watery eye, but is otherwise just fine. Good luck!
