Goose and Electric Fence

Hi All. Today is my first day on the forum. I've read it a lot, but never posted. Well, now I have an issue. My goose, Louise, I found her caught up in an electric fence this morning. There were three wires all wrapped up in her wings. I unplugged it and untangled her, but she couldn't get up. She was panting and drooling. I carried her to a soft place under cover and made sure she had food and water close. She drank right away.

Even though I just started with birds about three months ago, my experience has been that an early death sign is they go "down in the legs". Any thoughts you may have about things I need to be sure and do or whether or not you think she'll make it would be appreciated.

First off let me say all I know about geese from reading or being chased by wild ones

However, the bird was stressed and in a bad position for some time. She's probably exhausted! Give her a few days. If she was ready to die she wouldn't be drinking.

Thanks Andrea, I think you're right. She was completely exhausted. Her eyes looked good, she held her head up, she just needed a chance to rest. Hopefully the gander will come 'round and comfort her a bit!

OMG - the poor goose! I can't imagine being stuck in an electric fence for any time at all! Thank goodness you found her. And I assume you've taken measures so that can't happen again?

I think Louise is going to be o.k. My husband called me late in the day and said he was certain he saw an egg fertilized, so things are looking up!

As far as fixing the issue so it won't happen again, I haven't done so, yet. The small fence was needed and has a purpose, to keep all the animals in the yard out. I'm hoping she has a good memory and won't be trying to get in again. But I do worry. Will see how it goes for a bit before making a decision.
