GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

I would date all the eggs. Once Beignet's eggs arrive, swap out the oldest eggs. I've seen eggs over two weeks old develop, so I think you have at least a few days after you get them for her to go broody before the oldest egg may lose fertility. I would leave a full clutch, candle after a week and toss non-developers.
Sounds like a good plan, thank you.

Are people hatching geese eggs in an incubator or under a ex. Muscovy? I am planning to hatch Giant Dewlap Toulouse eggs in an Genesis 1588 incubator fan and egg turner. DH is planning to convert the chicken egg turner.

When I was reading some it seemed goose eggs do not need a turner? The way he would make the turner the egg would lay side ways in kind of a moat. I would appreciate any links and or input before I take these eggs and investment and stick them in the incubator. We will probably hatch 6 or so.

Is there a link for how to hatch goose eggs?

Hey Anna, Miss Lydia already posted the "bible" for hatching geese, but I'm happy answer questions since I want you to have a great hatch. I have had success by doing the following: maintaining 25% humidity, keeping them on sides and hand turning 3x daily, after 7 days, mist and cool eggs daily. I mark air cells with pencil on day 21. By day 25, I lay egg dip side up and stop turning. Once shadow rises above pencil line on bottom of egg (gosling moving into air cell), I lock down at 78-80% humidity and wait. If you have a kitchen scale, it is ideal to weigh eggs when setting them, then weigh on day 7, 14 & 21. Your ideal weight loss is 16% by day 28. You can adjust humidity and cooling periods based on checking weight weekly.

There is no exact science in my opinion, because everyone has different bators, climates, etc.

But personally I do have a turner 24/7 from when I set my eggs til I put them in lockdown. I do not touch them, besides candling. Then I put them in Lockdown & then it becomes the LONG LONG waiting game of pipping and hatching

I do not mist, and have a water tray I keep filled (when I fill my water I use almost boiling water as to not change heat in the bator), but Utah and others on here has had great success in hatching and has a pretty good routine for hatching.

I have had 100% hatches from duck/chicken/to dewlap goose eggs from shipped eggs to not so great. Utah even sent me refrigerated duck eggs out of pure curiousity and I hatched them

I think if they are fertile & packed correctly ~ You have a pretty good shot of hatching !

I have 14 goose eggs cooking in the bator right now & hope to have some Goosies soon!

It is encouraging to hear that with so many different ways people use they still hatch out goose eggs. I can't wait to see your hatchlings. Our bator is currently full with chicken eggs, 8 Polish are for a friend, 14 quail eggs DH received, 6 Ameraucanas and 12 Easter Eggers I won in a raffle and the rest our own Buff Orpington eggs. Sofar we have had good results but for one hatch. All we have done though is chickens.

The MAJOR dif between duck/geese and chicken/quail type eggs are the pipping & zipping time. Where chickens just pip n zip quickly ~ Ducks n geese TAKE a LIFETIME and then some to come out of those eggs!!!!!

I would love to hatch out some more Emu eggs this year ! (now those suck ~ You can't candle & take twice as long in incubation)

I am however REALLY REALLY hoping to get some Rhea eggs

My 3 barn cats finally let me take pics

I thought since everyone is waiting on hatching maybe we could share some Spring Pet Pics???? Anyone

I have a full automatic polyhatch incubator but my moter broke so i juststick a metel rod through a hole in the incubator and pull the tray about 5 times a day and i get better % of hatch rates doing this ! I water my eggs at day 9 and i literly have a bowl of luke warm water and i gently one by one dunk the eggs in the water for 9 seconds and put back in the bator and i do it once every 2 days and then at day 28 i stop the egg turning and fill the water tray full and then wait for the excitment and i dont open my incubator till they hatch unless i see a problem or 24 hours after an external pip :)

Last year and the year before i have had 100% perfect hatches with this method so i use this method but i like to hear about other methods :D
There is always a few eggs that pip and cant get out and die but i always have a close eye on every egg! And shine a light on them! No matter what when i shine a light on the eggs after day 28 they will move and wiggle in the egg and if they dont move or wiggle when they pip then i know somethings wrong :(

RG are your emus laying yet?

This is the main guide I used and ended up losing only one egg, and I'm pretty sure it just wasn't fertile to begin with. Great guide!
