Well after reading all the posts about Africans, and seeing all the lovely pics,I reckon I have a good chance of telling...but you´re quite right...here especially you have to be really sharp-eyed. If I manage to find one, I´ll put her with one of my dilute ganders...or one of the pieds......

And so far I can tell that two of my blue-eyed pied babies are ganders..they´re getting so handsome. One´s going to be a big chap (well, big for mine, at least!)

I will know by this weekend how my eggs will be developing

Well went to Auction and was CRAZY !!! A friend bought me 12 ~ 2loose eggs, and then another friend bought 9 Embden eggs that she put in my bator ....

NOW someone brought in 36 DOZEN Chinese Goose eggs!!! My friend (auctioneer) bought the remaining 15 dozen @ $3 dozen and sent them home with me to set in my Master Bator!

So I decided to set 50 and will set another 75 in a couple days ~ I have the room to set them ~ BUT I DO NOT want them all hatching at the same time
Could you imagine the cuteness .... I mean craziness

2 Ginger Eggs
4 "hopefully" White Africans

Oh and 1 baby Pot belly Pig

New to raising geese and this forum, so I could not figure out how to ask concerning my bizarre goose love triangle.

I was watching the white Chinese gander (a fairly young gander) try to bred another young white Chinese goose, when a second goose jumped in between and mounted the first goose as if to drown her. Otherwise, the geese seem to get along fine, although the second goose is clearly the alpha in the pack. There is a brown Chinese who has already mated and is sitting on a clutch of eggs at the moment.

1. Will mounting by the second goose prevent the first goose from mating or even laying eggs, (Maybe I only saw one episode, but will they bred anyway),
2. Do I need to put her in a second pen with another gander if I want to get some eggs?

Welcome to the forum.

Mating behavior has nothing to do with laying eggs. Whether there is a male in the picture or not, a female will lay eggs each season until she eventually gets too old and runs out of eggs (just like a human female).

drove to Holdereads last year and picked up some ducks.


I believe they are not "technically" not open to the public ~ I mean could you imagine getting anything done if people were always stopping by???? But she did get to go there and meet them ans see the place

I knew they were open for pick up but was told that you can not tour because they want to be sure the birds in their sanctuary are not exposed. I would have loved a tour. I can understand it would be hard to have everyone come by.

yes, I believe it may be required for their NPIP qualification? Bio security with chickens is absolutely necessary when it's your business.

Candled at day 5 and had a couple iffy but nothing definite. But I'm not worried as those were all the very first eggs. The girls all laid 35 - 45 eggs last year so there is still time for the boys to get it right. Jean Luc is determined to get it right.

Second set goes in tonight. BTW first hatch of the season today... Buckeye and Lemon Cuckoo chicks
