GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

this isn't the most recent photo but I was starting to wonder, the African gosling on the bottom is bigger than the one on the top, right now the one on the bottom is growing quite a few real feathers on its wings head and tail, but for some reason the one on the top is barely growing any and they both hatched at the same time but the only difference is that the one on top hatched from the wrong end of the egg, is this okay or is something wrong

Are they related? If not, then it could simply be the difference in the family line. they both look fine.

I have 2 goslings and one does not stand upright and his feet turn inward like "pigeon toed". He's about five weeks, eating chick starter and corn meal. The female seems fine. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

This is the female and she stands fine.

I'd say your goslings might benefit from some B3 in the form of brewers yeast, since they are still on chick starter they need to be put on the next feed either an all flock which would be best or game bird feed. Some goslings just seem to need more than others and leg issues are the result. you can buy Brewers yeast at whole foods or natural food store or on line then sprinkle some over their feed daily. looks like they are getting adequate grazing which is very important also, Another thing could it be a birth defect?

Corn meal? As in the stuff you make cornbread out of? If so Please Please Please stop feeding that, it can impact them and kill them.

Hello Gail328, if your feeding a chick starter I hope its the non medicated type. Because everything Ive read any medicated starter food is not a good idea for ducks or geese. I feed a game bird starter, its a bit more expensive but well worth the health benefits it supports. I also put "Broiler Booster" in my gosslings water for about the first several weeks, its designed for birds that grow very fast. And ducks and geese fit that description to a tee. So far I have a total of 11 ducks and 8 geese and I have only 1 duck that developed angle wing.

They actually have been eating the all flock outside for a few weeks since they spend there day with the flock. But they spend their nights in my bathroom because I don't feel they are steady enough to withstand the stampede of anxious chickens and ducks at the coop door in the AM. Today they will get all flock with the brewers yeast exclusively. Thanks for the help.

Yes non-medicated. Cant find game bird starter in my area.

Poor little babe. Was he like it when he arrived? Looks like it´s a defect, as he stands up oddly on his legs, too. And your little female...does she always hold her wing like that? If so, you may want to wrap it. As for chick crumb, etc, I leave off that at their age, except for a little as a treat to get them in, or move them, etc. Plenty of greens, a little corn would be ok, fruit, etc. is good. I see they´re on grass, and that´s just great.
