Well jtn we just have to keep in mind this is just a natural thing ganders do but we can't let them get the upper hand, usually once I have reminded Sam I will not tolerate his behavior towards me He goes off and behaves himself [for a while] lol When I walk behind them to their house in the evening it's so funny the other 3 go inside and Sam is usually last but as soon as he gets inside he turns around and acts like He is going to get me. Of course I watch I don't get any body parts closed in the door as I am saying good night. Just remember to carry something with you a long pole, broom so if he does come after you you have a way to stop him. usually just putting the broom between Sam and I does it most of the time. They can be pretty quick though. lol Gotta love them boys and their desire to protect.Yes serv...those are beautiful geese in your avatar. And, Miss Lydia...my gander (Sting) has started to act like he might be getting ready to challenge me. He half hisses and half honks when I bring them food and he has hesitated and given me the evil eye the last two evenings when I put them to bed. I am not looking forward to the confrontation.
I have this golf club like thing that the previous owners left behind. I started using it to herd the ducks but it works great with the geese as well. So far it is just a little hissing combined with honking. Like he is beginning to do a protect his females sort of thing but still sees me as a friend. I think it confuses him. I actually like it because it shows that he is going to take care of the girls and any family that come along gosling wise. Wish my ducks would do the same. They just sort of quack and run. However, they do, on occasion, split into two smaller flocks with a single male in each. So that is a good thing I suppose.Well jtn we just have to keep in mind this is just a natural thing ganders do but we can't let them get the upper hand, usually once I have reminded Sam I will not tolerate his behavior towards me He goes off and behaves himself [for a while] lol When I walk behind them to their house in the evening it's so funny the other 3 go inside and Sam is usually last but as soon as he gets inside he turns around and acts like He is going to get me. Agree. My adult flock (Khakis and Blue Swedish) fought and fought. The girls were like "oh, you won, we love you" until the next fight. Neither of them were willing to cry uncle for any length of time so, I had to decide which I wanted to keep and re-home the other. I settled on the Khaki drake and found a nice place for the Blue Swedish...he even has a horse tank to swim around in. They have gotten some Blue Swedish females for him as soon as they get bigger. So, now I have one Khaki Campbell drake with two Khaki females and one Blue Swedish female plus all the Cayugas. No comparison of ducks to geese although my drakes really like their girls it's everyone for themselves around here. lol My drakes will defend their girls from another drake till one of the drakes gets the upper hand then one drakes will be left out and the other will have all the girls. These girls aren't real loyal to their drake much either after they see who wins.Geese have a much better mind set.![]()
I know that look, i get it every time I step into the area. They just use us actually.Agree. My adult flock (Khakis and Blue Swedish) fought and fought. I have had to have a talk with the Cayugas. Told them they were acting too much like a sorority. One little female laying and egg a day while 13 more were just slackers trying to take credit for her hard work. They just looked at me with that "where's the treats" look. Oh well.
Nice tub, looks like a very nice place for them. Most of us use kiddy pools and just dump them out and refill, but in winter on days when it is in the high 30's I bring out the cement mixing tub it's shallow but at least they can half way bathe. And with temps down to 4 this morning they won't be getting bathing water for a while. Here's a photo of Gerald and Geraldine, it is a couple of years old now so they are much bigger these days. We no longer use the bath as we have no water supply up in the field and it became a mosquito breeding pool.
The geese, and the ducks when we have some, each have half a kiddies sand pit. With winter coming on the'll be down to a metal bucket soon though. It's a shame because they love their bath, but all our outside water gets turned off when the weather freezes so it's a case of bringing it up from the house, which is quite a trek!
