GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Wondering if I would be able to raise a self sustaining Goose flock in the Summer. They would graze during the day and have access to water always as well as access to sleep in the barn at night. Anyone done anything like this? Thanks!

Rambling I have 12 geese and 14 ducks who share an acre of land with a small pond completely fenced with all the grass that will grow in the Texas heat. At night they put themselves back to bed in their run and after dark I or the wife locks them in so no stray dogs or coyotes try and get them. So far it's worked going on two years now.

Wow! That's a lot of geese and ducks! I wonder if part of the reason they have been safe is because of the large numbers. I have two pekin hens and was hoping to get a buff or pilgrim goose pair. Would they be as intimidating to predators do you think?

Depends on the goose mainly my white Chinese pair will chase and bite my German Shepard!

My Geese will chase and bite my dogs IF I let them but a true predator like a coyote, fox, domestic dogs etc the geese have no protection from, maybe in large numbers they may make a formidable presence but it's only a matter of time someone will have to give up their life for the flock.Geese are mainly bluff and that doesn't go far with a hungry predator.

Good strong secure fencing during the day and locked up for protection at night.

I also have a dozen or so free range geese. They are always fed their oats twice a day in addition to whatever grass, daylillies, or other yard plant they mow down. I used to have water lilies and lotus -- add those to their "like" list as well
