GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

The geese and I thank you Poult!

I will move all the eggs to the better nest and destory the second nest tomorrow. Then make sure to add in more hay/straw to make up for it.

She doesn't look like she eats them, but I haven't noticed feathers in the nest, and she doesn't look like she's pulled her own feathers out. She does use the hay to completely cover the eggs, but I haven't see feathers in there. Or maybe I just haven't noticed them, she really piles on the hay I have to dig down a good foot to fish out the eggs.

Since having them I've put them on a 36% protein grower ration because they looked thin when I first got them. It's from my local feed mill, it's the kind that gets fed with free choice corn. So corn in one feeder and the protein/supplement ration in the other. They've been eating the same ratio of cracked corn to protein/supplement ration as my hens do. Except the hens are on a 26% layer ration. So I would think she'd be getting enough protein? They've gained weight, a look nicely filled out and have glossier feathers. Do you think that will help her if it was a protein deficiency? She's been on that for over 2 weeks, they were on the layer ration the first 1.5 - 2 weeks, but they weren't putting on weight the way I thought they should. So maybe it hasn't caught up with her yet?

I'll keep an eye on her this weekend to see if she's eating the feathers.

Your very welcome glad to help! :)

Sounds good!

Um ok that's plenty of protein so tell me what you see this weekend & I will try & figure out why she is doing that. :) Feather plucking isn't always from a defiancy it can be from boredom too but it sounds like that's not it so we will have to wait until you see her eating them or not.

Is that too much protein? Now that they look better should I switch them back to the layer?

I'll let you know what she does this weekend. And I'll recheck both of their chests and the nest area to see if maybe she is actually using it for the nest.

Another thing to consider is she is just being a brazen hussy with her mate, I saw this with my pair my goose would literally throw herself on the gander he was over whelmed since he had never mated with a goose before just my Muscovy's So what you maybe seeing is her way of getting him excited enough to mate with her. They can be interesting. lol
