GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Today is day 31 for my goose that is setting. She has 4 eggs under her out of five. One exploded. I haven't tried to check the eggs but nothing is going on. She is a Toulouse and the gander is a large mix breed. Should I let her keep going to say 35? I read that large breeds can sometimes take that long.

As long as none other eggs explode why not.

I guess I am just worried about fertility. My gander is over fifteen years old
I'd slip a few out at a time and candle them. My gander is 8yrs old and I know fertility is down in him. Candle and put a dot or something on any you think might be viable then put those back then take out a few more and do the same till you have candled all. if they aren't any good I'd get her out so she can get back to life. Putting a dot will help you not bring out the same egg to candle more than once.

Good idea. I think I will let her go until Friday. And then take check the eggs or take her off

The worst part is I have three ganders! The other two are both under 3 years old. But he is head honcho around here. So if I don't get any goslings then I will have to take his newly acquired mate from him next spring. His mate of 13 years died two years ago.

I understand completely my youngest gander will be 1 yr old next week and he lets my 8yr old have his way with both females He respects his adoptive dad. Maybe look into rescues I know the closest one to us has geese and they have older geese. might find him and older goose for him to live out his life with.

So I took one of the eggs last night. I broke it open and there was a formed goose but it had stopped. the gosling had probably stopped at around week three from the growth. I have left the other three. hoping for a miracle at this point. she has two more days and then I will take them all and she can get off the nest. she is so thin, she is a dewlap Toulouse and might weigh 6 pounds at the moment :( thank you for your suggestions. on a positive side, I know that my gander is still fertile but I will still probably break the pair this winter, at least until she sets and then let him take over being super gander!!

we have a local flea market that sales almost every animal. I am hoping to go Wednesday and maybe find a few goslings to give her.
