GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Serv, I have a game for you....I remember you said you could tell males from females by their faces eyes...ok. I don´t think it´s an exact science, but it´s interesting...and you seem to enjoy having a go...Did you see Kalsti´s latest post about another goose? (can´t remember which thread) What sex, do you reckon it is?
So here´s the game.....We can post some photos on and see if you can guess right (if we already know the sex) But obviously not ovious ones! Or, like I´ll do now, you guess and then we have to wait to confirm! I keep changing my mind about one of these.....they´re crosses, a few months old. Look at the length of the bill on the bigger one! GO!....

Ok, well the little gosling that pipped yesterday probably won´t make it...the goose (first time mum) got too keen and has been extremely rough with "helping" it. Yoke and blood on the other eggs, and over her bill. I didn´t get there just in time with this one, Miss Lydia!

I brought it into the house to die quietly, but it´s still hanging on and making very weak little noises. I can´t tell how much damage she´s done, really. Some damage to its belly.

So I put the other 6 eggs under the same muscovy (I left one infertile egg under her to keep her happy for a bit, hence she´s still sitting thank goodness), so they should hatch out over the next few days, and the goose is now cuddling with the 3 goslings that the dear duck had already hatched. What a good duck she is. I may leave her to care for one gosling. She´s actually a very good mum to her ducklings, too.

So, I´ll see how things go over the next few days.....

I'm sorry livin, Did you try washing it off in some weak betadine/warm water?

and I'm for letting mama Scovy have at least one although mine seem to be better at mamaing when they have a couple.

I haven´t washed it, my hubby´s nursing it and he wants me to leave it alone, as it looks clean and i want it to dry up, although it´s still been weeping, poor little soul. I like hubby being involved with them, so I have to let him have a say!

My main concern is that it has no "fuel"(yoke) as I´m pretty sure that´s what the goose has "cleaned"! Silly goose! I have some stuff here for cleaning, though, and I´ll use it if it pulls through. If it gets strong enough to lift its head I´ll try to feed it some slops.

As regards the muscovy, I´d like to leave her with one or two, I know 2 would be better, but I think she´ll take them to eat muscovy things, not goose things...bugs not grass......And, the other thing is that the geese know they´re goslings and I think the ganders will try to steal them from her.
Do you remember that she hatched out the singleton gosling a couple of weeks back when I wasn´t expecting it and when I arrived home I found the gander looking after it? Well, I´m sure that´s what would happen.

But maybe I´ll leave her with the last egg or 2, and keep a very close eye on the situation.

haha ok and i love that game btw :D and i might not always be 100% right but 99% :D anyway wats the thread called ?! And the goose with the long beak is female and the younger one looks like a male and look like french toulouse or since it has a long beak it looks like a greylag

I've got one for you, Serv. The goose on the right is a mystery breed. I refer to her as a production Toulouse, but I think she is crossed with another breed. What do you think?
