GOOSE BREEDING THREAD - for breeding, incubating, hatching and rearing.

Yes thats how I do it, because i dont have a designated hatcher. I got some good news, # 4 pipped last night around midnight. As soon as he's out I'll get a pic. So far that will give me a 29% hatch rate. 5 of 17 but then again out of the ones that were fertile. It would be more like 5 out of 6. And that would be a 83% hatch rate. But either way Im excited they are here. I'll get some more pics up soon.

I just got 2 new goslings and i am having trouble naming them any suggestions would help

Naming your babies are (in my opinion) kinda of a personal thing. My suggestion is watch them for a day or so and see how they act , that's how I name mine. In fact my children all got their nick names using that same technic My middle daughter 's nick name was "Dooser" only because I was watching the Jim Henson show Fraggle Rock with my oldest daughter who at the time was about 21 months old and the espisode came on about the dooser's getting hick-ups. Being a brand new baby when my daughter sneezed she'd have a FULL BODY shake, and that reminded me of the show.

So......................... her nick name became "Dooser"

Oh Yeah # 4 hatched out this morning at 05:30 June 1 2014

Oh yay! I'm so happy for you! And thank you for the pics! Mine hatch (with varying-to-low success) under the goose herself and god help anyone that gets within 20 feet of the nest during pip-time. I've never seen a freshly hatched one. So adorable and so tired after breaking its way out of that concrete-shelled goose egg.

Congrats!

Awww! Floppy babies! Congrats!

I admit, I don't know how incubators work so I don't know if this would screw up the environment, but: Can you reach in and touch the egg? As someone else said, some hatch late. But when they're getting close, I want to say that last week or so, if you touch the egg you can feel the tapping inside. It's faint and only occasional at first but as things get closer it gets firmer and more frequent. If you can hold your hand on it for 10-20 seconds you should feel at least one tap on the shell if it's close. But again, I have NO IDEA if that's viable with an incubator.

But this brings up a question I just thought of - Do eggs rot/burst in incubators like they do under birds? Well not under all birds, my turkeys are absolutely fastidious about getting rid of those things - like 100 yards away - and many they catch before they burst. The ducks will just shove unviables off to the side to roll down the side of the nest (without the heat from the bird it slows the rotting/bursting). The geese are a mixed bag of just continuing to sit on them before and after (leaving me to clean up the nest and remaining eggs while they eat) or rolling them away. Do incubators have this issue or no?
A big yes to they will burst in the incubator like they do under the birds!!!!!!!!!
