Well, my friends, it appears the former owner is not done with making my life difficult. He contacted the Utah department of agriculture today and reported me. And even though I had already contacted them before and explained the situation, the state vet appears to have misunderstood. In any event, I am now being required to have all untested birds on property tested (45 birds) before getting NPIP. I am also being fined $200. My vet, bless his heart, is coming out to my place next week on his day off to get this done. Not sure what he will charge, although it will not be the regular clinic prices. Lab fees are estimated at $280.

Iain,

Obviously, I missed a lot over the last few days. However, from this post alone I take it that some less than pleasant stuff went down and all I can say is sorry this is happening to you. My mother always used to say, no good deed goes unpunished and always thought that to be pretty pessimistic, but sadly have found out that sometimes that's just life.

Luckily, there are some good people still out there in the world, so those of us who like doing good deeds do so without expectation and too hell with the consequences afterward. Big hugs

and hang in there. Remember, what comes around does go around and those nasty boogers will get theirs in the end somehow. Well that, and you managed to save all those birds from a bad situation and find them loving homes. So, keep your chin up!

Despite my finding a Cali vet to test 75 geese for a flat fee of $1,000, Carole chose to use a different vet. Despite my repeated requests to get an estimate from "her vet" prior to making an appointment, she went ahead and had 26 birds tested, got charged $1600, then informed me of all this after the fact. When I got that news, I almost backed out of going completely and told her it did not seem worth the trip for 26 birds (mostly ganders), she begged me to still come there and take the untested birds too. I told her I would take a few of the untested but made no promises as to how many. But when I got there and saw how awful the place and people were, I decided to take as many as would safely fit into my rig. Therefore, all the juveniles I brought back were untested.

All adults look purebred.

Mrs. Magoo, thank you for the kind words and help!!

Glad you made it through the storm with minimal issues. Having grown up on the Florida coast and lived through a few rough ones myself, I totally understand if you fall behind on my little goose rescue thread. But don't let it happen again, you hear?

Sadly the geese aren't the only ones who were suffering. A gentleman took on some of the chickens and ended up with a mess on his hands with severely sick birds he ended up putting down. Was his only option to not infect his flock. It was well documented through necropsy of birds that died shortly after he took them home.

He felt awful, but in the end was trying to do right by the chickens and ended up with no birds.

Iain no worries, the tests will be covered for you, we won't let those people think they are getting you.

So anyways........ Got the DNA back on the remaining 4 buffs here. 1 gander 3 geese, although 1 of the girls isn't measuring up at all. She has blue eyes, a thin neck, no keel or dewlap. So she won't be breedable sadly. Bummer to have ordered 4 had one DOA, ordered and paid for for 2 more, again a death so we have 4 out of 6 goslings and none of the eggs we set hatched (which is what it is on shipped eggs).

Both our grey productions are ganders so will be hunting girls for them next year.

FYI all, for those hoping to breed these. The juveniles may or may not lay many eggs next year and fertility will be a crap shoot at best since these are a very slow to mature and develop breed.

Yes Ma'am.

Iian and Celtic you should be commended for what a beautiful thing that you have done for those geese. I only wish I could adopt some but finances have gone to the negitive right now. My chickens and ducks are paying their feed bill for now. My birds are never on a baren peice of land.
