A word of advice, as everyone becomes excited about possibly adopting some of these very special geese. If you do not already own geese, please educate yourself to their needs. Diet, housing, life span, and medical care. They are 20+ year commitment, they are not as simple as chickens and you need to be well educated, and capable of providing for all of their needs.
These geese came from a situation they shouldn't have been in. They deserve to be kept in the best possible homes from here on out. That means financially committing to proper feed (not just chicken layer feed and not chicken scratch), as well as any and all other requirements they have.

x2 couldnt have said it better myself

Celtic has a list of what she feeds on her website for anyone that needs a place to start for proper feeding

I have chickens and ducks... but no geese as of yet. I want a cpl Sebastopol, was waiting until next Spring for them. I have already ordered The Book of Geese: A Complete Guide to Raising the Home Flock, and I figured since it was written by Mr. Holderread, that was a good place to start?
I have time to read and prepare before they are able to be shipped in the fall.

Excellent news Krafty!

Tomorrow, we will worm and band the 35 juveniles. It is so hard to get an accurate male/female count by counting legs with paint (red for girls, blue for boys) while they are in the group. So, as we id them, we will update my inventory sheet. However, please keep in mind that Carole's vent sexing is not 100% accurate as there are two that have been sexed by my vet as girls that were marked as boys.

Also, based on the numbers of orders placed so far for adoption... for available juveniles, there are still one pair of brown, one pair of white, one pair of grey, and possibly one pair of buff. There are also at least 4 extra grey ganders in the group. All 25 adults are still available, which includes 4 or 5 pairs of greys and one pair of whites.

Love the rescue site! Just filled out the offical adoption papers for the older gray pair. I will call the feed store tomarrow to arrange for food. Lets see, I feed my geese in groups, so what will a grown pair eat in a 2-3 monthes? Hmm... Any donation suggestions for that?

Thanks, Marty!! Do you want an adult grey pair then?

FYI, since they are on pasture, the feed costs so far are not bad. I have been filling a large bucket 2x per day for each group, and the total group estimate cost is 4 bags per week (20% flockraiser, 16% layer pellet, rolled oats and cracked corn) at approximately $70.

Long day at the farm, but glad to have gotten so much done. Hubby doubled the yard size today, we turned the injured babies back with group and broke down the side pen.

A volunteer from the Utah byc thread come up today with her husband and helped us catch, worm and tag the 35 juveniles. Carole had vent sexed most of the juveniles and marked the girls with red paint on legs and the boys with blue, so there is no 100% guarantee they are sexed correctly.

We took inventory and counted the numbers twice to make sure it was correct. These are the results:

BUFFS
7 girls, 3 boys, 2 unmarked

GREYS
3 girls, 7 boys (this number includes our blind girl)

WHITES
5 girls, 2 boys

BROWNS
4 girls, 2 boys

Hope you got some much needed rest last night. Will take the newest pictures and add them to the others later today. Going to work on the new open air building again this week.
