Goose or Gander? I don't have a clue

I would be thrilled to have a pair of Buff Africans. They are all lovely geese and will "talk and talk" to you if you talk to them. I got the Fancy Gosling Assortment from Holderreads in Corvallis, so I know they are pure. On the rare occassions that I actually hold one, their down is so soft it's amazing. Thank you all for your input. I'll be looking for some eggs soon.

Oh thats really cool that you got them from Holderreads

Our own pair of Buff Africans are directly decended from Holderread lines which is how the Buff colour was introduced into the UK

Wishing you best of luck with them next year.

i'm no expert but i bet some other lines or even breeds where crossed in there

Yes the other line was that of the UK breeder Tony Axon who was only able to import Buff African females into the UK. To establish the Buff colour in this country the imported females were paired to his Brown Africans.

i see. I was just wondering because they appeared to have a small nob and size and light color. They're pretty though. I like they're huge dewlap.

Thats because they're yearlings and still developing. The smaller one is this year's gosling and thankfully her beak is getting progressively darker. However, you are correct about beak colour as it is a common fault with the Buffs in the UK to have orange beaks. Im hoping to get a high quality brown female to pair the Buff Gander to next year

I need to preserve type and size and not sacrifice that for the colour.

The Gander's very nice and good size but I hope that dewlap doesnt get too big as I dont want him looking like our Dewlaps!!!

If i ever figure out how to post pics i'll show you mine. They where ordered from holdereads. we got 4 (two pair) the one gander is developing much much faster than the rest. The one that is developing faster has a huge knob on a chocolate bill. the rest have no knob on a pink bill. The one with the knob is also darker in color.

just looking at the size of the neck on your Emden I'd say gander.
