No worries. A female is a goose and a male a gander. It is similar with ducks also a female is a duck and a male a drake. Not sure why they give the boys cool names and not the girls....
Thank you for the replies I will keep an eye on him he is sweeter than she is since the one we thought might be a boy is the girl lol. Neither of them hiss at anything except the cat. I am always with the kids when they help with chores we will watch closer when spring rolls around.
I didnt want a gander but now that we have him im quite enjoying having the pair they are funny characters.

I can vouch they hurt when they bite. But like @Iain Utah says teach your children not to be afraid of them, never run from them always show that they are confident around the geese. The light weight pole is a great idea I used it here to teach my geese the dogs were off limits when we're all out together. Now they pay them no mind. I just put the pole down between them and used it as a stop sigh. I have also used the broom on my gander a few times to push him out of the way when he was playing body guard to his mate when I would try to walk passed them. I really enjoy my geese they just need to learn they can not push us around.

I have a shepards crook. I only have to show it to the gander. The goose is very passive. The gander only bites when your back is turned. I confess I laugh when he bites the dogs butt.
