Goose panting?

It’s panting, only panting, it is odd as it isn’t too hot. At that age they do seem to have trouble regulating their temperature, they’re feathers are coming in and they’re growing so fast at that age. I remember constantly scrambling for water for mine, they’d be cuddling one second because they were cold, next second they’re overheated and panting. Still at those temps it shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Does he do this a lot or was this a one time recent thing?

He isn’t coughing or spitting up mucous by the looks of it so it doesn’t really look like a respiratory infection, it looks like just regular panting,.

Something to look for is if it looks like his butt is heaving a lot, it might seem odd but birds air sacks extend all the way through their abdomen, if he’s struggling to breath his back end will look like it’s really straining in and out, you’ll see definite movement back there with normal panting too, but if there’s another issue like a tumor or an enlarged liver that’s pushing in on the lungs the bird will really strain to get oxygen in and out.
It doesn’t look like Norbert is doing that though, so I think he’s just stress panting.

Thanks for easing my worries yet again goosebaby, I thought it was probably just panting but I'm a first time goose daddy so of course I want him to be ok, it just makes it a little bit more worrisome when most vets will only deal with dogs and cats I need to know I can spot the signs of something serious myself.

It's just an occasional thing and he was fine before we went out which did make me think it could be stress.

Hi! Just found this page because my gosling also just started panting on and off today. Did everything work out for yours? I'm hoping it is just a temperature-regulating thing. I've only had her for a few days, so this is really disconcerting to me.

Yes, as he got older the panting problems seem to have stopped - it does seem as though goalongs have difficulty regulating temperature as they grow, just make sure there is lots of water available and try keep them away from stressful situations 😌

Do you know the temp in your brooder?
Directly under the heat lamp is super hot, but the rest of the brooder seems to be between 70-80 degrees. We're trying to keep it around 75 (that's at least what we read online to try and have the temperature). And she has like 6 square feet of space around from the heat lamp to get away from it if too hot.

Is she the only one in the brooder? If you can raise the lamp up to get it about 80 at the warmest part, also make sure she has drinking water along with food 24/7. My goslings were kept at 80 right under the heat lamp and I dropped the temp 5 degree each week there after.

That's super good to hear! Do you remember around what week that was that it stopped? I can't tell whether her breathing is too heavy (with the butt rising advice from a previous commenter) or not since I haven't had her for very long. To me it seems like she's breathing a little heavily, but I don't know what normal breathing is since she's new, lol. The panting just happens here and there though. I haven't noticed it in the last couple hours, but the breathing might still be heavier?

Right now, she's the only one there. My boyfriend wants her to bond with the chicks and be a guard goose, so I had to compromise that we could get her a partner if she doesn't end up bonding with them (she keeps trying to bite them when we try to give them some time near each other to get used to one another). But we have essentially windows from her brooder to the chick brooder, so they can see one another.

And I'll try to raise the lamp up to get it less hot in that spot. Thank you!!

Im very sorry but no i don't remember vat exactly nwhat age the panting stopped. It might even have been after his first molt? Which would be what...4 months old??
