Hi!
Was wondering if somebody could please answer a couple of goose questions for me?

I have 2 female geese setting on infertile eggs.
I was thinking about ordering a few goslings for them to raise.

Will they pair up with a gander they think is their own baby?
Will a gander pair up with a goose he thinks is his mom?

Has anybody ever ordered from Metzer Farms?

I've not ordered from Metzer Farms myself, but one of our local extension agents just relocated here from California, and speaks very highly of them and their operation.

I trust her opinion (she's a poultry expert) and wouldn't hesitate to order from Metzer based on it.

Geese are the sames as chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc - they will not accept just any baby you decide to stick under them. Geese are just as likely to step on and kill goslings as they are to peck them to death. If you want more goslings then brood them yourself until they can defend themselves in the pen with the adult geese.

Thank you Brickman House!
Ordering goslings is kinda new to me!

MissPrissy,
If it was any other bird, I would not even attempt it! One of my gooses loves babies! When I first got her, she chased some orphan ducks around until they let her be the mom! When I had to sell thoses babies, she hungout with some other ducklings, despite the mother ducks objections! Last year I hatched out a gosling for her, she was thrilled with, and a darn good mom too, HER baby!
If they don't accept her or she don't accept them, I can raise them!

But, if SHE rasies them, do you think they would pair up?

I've never ordered from Metzer Farms before, but I'm awaiting my shipment of 5 Runner duckings and a Sebastopol goose.

From what I have heard, They have a waiting list to get the geese you want. Several Kentucky folks have an order with them and are waiting now, The order was placed in January, They are supposed to arrive the end of this month.
I guess thats not too long... But the quality of the Geese are supposed to be excellent.

Are they coming from Metzers?

Yes, and I'm so excited! I think that the birds are supposed to be shipped around March 21st. I placed the order approximately two weeks ago.

Everybody seems to be skipping over the question about breeding. The short answer is yes in most cases they will breed with their sons if nothing else is available. You have a better case since such a match will not result in actual in-breeding. You had better start thinking(and reading) on the subject because the next generation either will have to mate with a close relative or you are going to have to do some trading to get new fresh blood into your flock.~gd
