I have three white geese (not sure what breed), 2 females and one male.
They are a little over two years old.

Yesterday evening, as I herded them and the chickens back into their "yard"...I noticed the male wasn't moving as fast as the lady geese.

As I got to the gate, he was the last one, and I waved my hands in a "shoo....go on..." way, and he tripped over his own feet, and stayed on the ground.
(Not on his side, but on his belly, like when they lay down)

I waved at him again, figuring he'd get up and go on, but he just stayed right there in front of me.

I actually reached down and picked him up...something I could NEVER do normally....And he didn't struggle to get away.
I took him over to a chair and sat down, feeling him all over...couldn't feel any swellings or anything.

Feathers were nice and tight and "groomed", so, nothing had gotten ahold of him. (besides, i have a securely fenced yard)

I put him in a small shed we used to use for goats (we don't have them any longer)..with food and water, thinking he'd be either OK or dead in the morning.

This morning, I went to let him out...he *did* hiss at me this time, but i was still able to pick him up and hold him without a struggle.
I again felt him over...nothing seemed amiss...

I set him down and again he just stayed there for a few mintues until the lady geese came over to investigate...then he got up, but appeared to be "weak"...but he did walk over to the water with the other geese and drink.

Since it's been a long time since I held any of these three, I don't know what their feet should feel like...cool, or warm, like my chickens.
His were cool.
Eyes were bright...

Everyone else seems fine.

Any ideas?
Yes, they're all wormed and stuff...

once my duck hurt his foot and we had to splint it. when he walked, he didn't open it up fully and then didn't move at all. it wasn't that hard to splint and now he walks fine, though that foot is not quite perfect. he keeps up with all the others, though.

all i can think is maybe his leg or foot is hurt?

i think keeping him where he's protected at night is a good idea like you've been doing.

good luck.

i've been told that waterbird legs heel better than chicken legs, if that's any comfort.

No, his legs/feet are fine.

I just checked on him...
Even though he drank water this morning, i just went out and threw "treats" to everybody...lettuce, tomato ends (we had BLT's for lunch)...While everybody else ran to the goodies, he just stood there...even when i threw some directly in front of him.

On looking at him in comparison with the other two..(the lady geese), he does look thinner width-wise than they do.
I've never noticed it before, he may have always been that way, but, with all that's going on, I'm sure it isn't a good sign.

I moved him back out into my yard again, and put some food and goodies directly infront of him..he just sits there.

I think he's short for this world.

~~sigh~~

i really don't know anything about geese, but when my chickens do that, and usually it's a rooster, i confine him and give him a shot of vitamin B. i also put vitamins in his water and terramycin. i also check for bugs to make sure he's not infested (which can cause him to lose weight). i also make sure they have warmth so he doens't have to regulate his own temp if he has a fever. i make him a mixture of yogurt and boiled egg yolk. they usually won't eat but after a while, that vitamin B kicks in and they'll try and drink some water.

i hope he gets better.

Poor guy passed away about an hour ago.

I looked out my window to see what he was doing, and he had slumped over on his side.
I thought, "oh, ****"..and went out to see...
He had apparently died not long after I put him in the yard, as he was already stiff.

BTW, I had given him some liquid B-vitamins mixed with a little water this morning after my original post.
I had to squirt it down his gullet with a syringe.
But I didn't make him choke, or anything.

Anyone have any ideas what could have caused this very sudden and rapid demise?
