Hello, one of my geese has injured herself. I am not quite sure how but she has been hopping on one leg for the last 2 1/2 weeks. I took her to the vets and they took x-rays. Everything looks good on the x-rays apart from some swelling around her hock joint.
They prescribed:
Meloxadin injection 0.7ml every 24hr
Excede injection 200mg 0.85 ml every 3 days for 15 days.

She is on day 7 of the pain medication and day 3 of the antibiotic. The hock is still swollen and she is walking only a few steps a day. I am using heat/cold therapy and a low level laser daily. Can anyone advise on pain medication as she is still in a lot of pain. Could I increase her dose of .7ml. She is 7.4 pounds. Both vets are on vacation this week so cannot contact them. Any ideas as to what this could be? Could it be a slipped tendon? The vet is unsure as to what it is.

This is the injured hock:

Is your vet experienced with waterfowl?

When you feel the bulge does it wiggle around?

You could try Naproxen, there’s no dosing instructions for birds that I can find but the dosage for dogs is 2mg per kg. I have dosed one of my geese with 100mg without adverse effects but I would aim for no more than 50mg just in case.

No my vet is not experienced with birds. I have called a vet with some experience but she is not in until Friday. The lump on the inside of her leg just feels like bone. I think it might just be the shape of her hock. The swelling is on the front and outside of the joint. I have been keeping her inside for the most part. The joint is also hot at times.

The photo is not great but this was her leg before she injured it. It definitely has that lump on the inside.
