Hey folks, the premier Blue Orp rooster that was the granddaddy of all those blue and black orp chicks you bought from Gordie has passed away yesterday from heat stress. Nor did we have any offspring from him because the broody hens broke almost all of the eggs they were setting on.

He was such a big rooster and the heat was just too much for him. The heat index was 108 degrees and had fans and cold water in front of him and his girls. He was not the only victim of heat, two other girls died as well.

So the Gordie x Catalupa Farm flock is without a rooster and we will not be replacing him with that flock soon until we get things settled. Most of the hens are already passed two to three years old and they are not laying as good as they used to be.

RIP Gordon!

This is terrible, and I'm so sorry.

We have Buff Orpingtons, and have been having much higher highs here--I'm very worried at these reports of heat-related fatalities. I'm thinking that the more time they can spend out of their run during the day, the better...they seem to stick to the trees and bushes, and of course get more breeze.

Sometimes I wonder if it was cruel of me to choose such a heavily feathered breed to live in this climate.

I'm hearing all of these heat stress stories and I'm glad that for the most part that here in AZ, it's a dry heat.

....Thinking of someway to get AC into the coop before next summer....
