Well, we brought home 5 chicks that were 95% guaranteed hens, and our 7 week old barred rock has officially started crowing this weekend. I was willing to ignore all the size / waddles / comb / personality that had been shouting ROOSTER until this point, but I cannot have a rooster within city limits. He is free to a home that will give him a chance! He is already displaying some desirable rooster traits - checking on his ladies, ensuring they eat first, and even 'going easy' on a hen recovering from splay leg. He's been handled every day, really a nice boy.
