After doing an abundance of research and deciding a I wanted a goose to keep with my ducks I bought several african goose eggs online and managed to hatch 1/4 (the other 3 never even began to develop.) The gosling hatched late yesterday morning (Will be a day old in in 8 hours.) I believe it hatched a bit early as its stomach area is still a bit open with the umbilical cord still attatched - it looks kinda like a very thin thread. (The yolk was completely absorbed.)

How long until my gosling will be able to properly walk? Currently s/he seems to struggle to walk normally and I've begun to worry that s/he may have straddle leg. The gosling (Momo) also seems to flip on its back and is unable to correct itself without assistance. I've heard niacin/brewers yeast can be a big help in these situations (and that they need it anyway) so I will be buying some along with electrolytes a bit later today.
EDIT: Thought I should add what I have in the brooder for Momo to walk on. Currently I have pine shavings in part of it and a towl in another part. When s/he tries to walk on the pine shavings s/he seems to push it rather than actually walk on it.

Also when will Momo begin to eat? So far s/he has expressed little interest in food or water although I've heard that's normal for the first 24 hours since they can survive off the yolk they absorbed for that period (Though for now i have offered him/her a bit of boiled egg yolk along with some water. S/he did drink a little but not much.) . Also in terms of food - is it normal that it hasn't pooped yet since it hasn't ate?
EDIT: S/he pooped just now, although it was very liquidy and a pale greenish color. Is this normal?

Sorry for the abundance of questions, I'm just concerned for my little baby. <3

How is your gosling doing?

She won't want to eat for at least 24 hrs your right. once she begins eating and drinking add some Nutritional yeast or brewers yeast to her feed it will help keep and leg issues at bay and neurological issues. Chick starter doesn't have the amount of niacin in it that is beneficial for water fowl. so 1 Tab per cup of feed till 10 weeks old.

I always use towels in the brooder till 2 weeks old with shaving underneath. This give the gosling traction to walk and keep her feet under her.
Shaving alone can make feet slip and slide.

Thank you for replying! I'm not really sure honestly as I don't have any other chicks to compare it to.
Momo still has taken no interest in food or water though will take a single drink of i dip his/her bill into it at the tip. I've been hearing that about the chick starter and intend to buy some brewers yeast today to add to its food. :)

Currently there is a towel on top of the majority of the shavings but Momo seems to still manage to flip over and fall on his/her back until i flip him/her back over. (It doesnt appear to have spraddle leg and keeps its feet under itself) Momo also seems to have a bit of a hard time holding his/her neck up but can for short periods of time and grooms his/herself frequently.

I really don't want to have to cull this poor baby, hoping there is something that can be done for it.

When getting the Brewers yeast go to TSC and pick up some Poultry nutri drench and start giving Momo drops just a tiny bit full strength right inside the bill {never down the throat] PND can be given straight and can be a real plus with poultry who had a hard time hatching to give them a boost.

My local TSC doesnt seem to carry it so I've ordered some online with 2-day shipping. I'm really hoping Momo lasts long enough for it to come in - worst case scenario I'll just use it on my laying ducks. Right now I've given Momo some electrolytes and Niacin - I guess I'll get to see if Momo improves. Momo has still taken no interest in food or water, is there anything I can do for this?

Thank you for all the help Miss Lydia! Do you know if there is anything I can do for the constant flipping over? Right now I have a wash cloth circled around it and it's sleeping, though Momo has managed to flip out of even that several times.

I've sat Momo in a cup to see if s/he's able to stand- and sure enough if put in a cup s/he can support his/her own weight. Is it possible this could be wry neck? I've noticed Momo always has his/her neck to the left and never straight forward. I've tried gently moving his/her neck to the right and Momo always puts it right back to where s/he had it on the left. Though Momo is able to lift his/her head up (usually when i dip the tip of his/her bill in the water s/he'll lift up his/her head to take a drink but never will take a drink after the initial dip if I dont wait a while) though tends to keep it lowered down. Is it possible its just a less severe case of wry neck? I'd really rather not cull this chick if anything can be done for it, though I also don't want it to suffer.

Doesn't sound like it's suffering, so give Momo some time. Could be a case of wry neck and hopefully the PND will take care of it. There are other things you can do also so search wry neck.

A small towel can help keep Momo in proper sitting make it like a donut and sit him down into it feet first. That should help with the flipping.
Okay it's been 24 hrs now right? or when did he hatch? Start offering some soupy feed tiny bits in the bill so he gets a taste. water same way after eating. Make sure to keep his nares clean. I say as long as their is life we give them a chance you'll know when he gives up. I just hope he doesn't.

What breed is Momo?

Thank you for the response! Momo is an african gosling. In a few hours Momo will be 3 days old. For the past few hours I've been searching up things about wry neck and I'm wondering if I could somehow make a neck splint to see if I can get his head to stick out straight rather than be stuck to his left side like it is.
I've had to force feed him a bit of egg yolk as well as water as he shows no intentions of eating on his own. (I have tried dipping his bill into soupy food and water - he'll dip his head back the first bite/sip like he's swallowing but after that he throws a fit and won't have anything to do with it.)
I've tried wrapping a donut around him with a large wash cloth and he still manages to flip out of that every ten minutes or so and I'm considering just finding a container I can sit him in where he cant push himself over.

A container would work probably with a soft wash cloth or towel.
Not sure if the neck brace would work it would have to be something soft like the insulation foam you put around pipes to keep them from freezing maybe?

I don't understand why he won't eat at 3 days old he should be gobbling up his feed. Do you have any other babies like chicks or ducklings thinking maybe if you put him with them they would show him how to eat.
