Hello everyone, my family just bought an acre of land and we got chickens for the first time. 3 golden comets, 3 Guinea, 2 silver phoenix, and 3 cockoo marans. Got them at tractor supply. We got a large run for them as we don’t have our property fenced off yet. Anyone have experience with these breeds? Any info you think I should know about them?

Thanks for all the info everyone.

So the cockoo marans can go broody? Good to know, I’ll watch out for that.

The Guinea are yeah Guinea fowl I believe. I’ve heard they can get bossy yeah, but I actually got them for predator control. I’m in the country so, I want to get the alarm squawks if a stray dog or hawk, or coyote tries to get in. That way I can stop it. Hopefully they keep the peace a bit, we will see.

Yeah so the comets are high laying for sure! We got them for that, but didn’t think about the issues. How common is this? How can you help mitigate the issues?

I do have one other question…. I’ve got 3 cockoo marans, and I read the rooster will show signs early on by lighter feathers. They were supposed to be sexlinked at tractor supply, but I’m suspecting one is a rooster. Here are pics of two of the cockoo’s…. As you can see the comb is more pronounced also on the cockoo. I believe they were pretty new born when I bought them, maybe a couple days old, that was about 3 weeks ago. So I’d say at most 4 weeks old?

Cute! I am not sure on the sex. You can post a thread in our What Breed and Gender forums for help... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/what-breed-or-gender-is-this.15/
