My 6 white leghorns have been laying mostly 2 eggs a day but on 2 days I got 3 eggs. So guessing 3 of my 6 are laying. Just now came in from checking on them and I had 2 good eggs already in their nesting boxes as normal but... I had 2 small softshell eggs just outside the nesting boxes on the wood shavings!! So...I assume I had 4 of my 6 layed today but 2 were not any good. They had a nice yolk but only a membrane around them. Is this normal for some new young birds or do I have a problem with a couple of birds?? They have shell and grit to eat in seperate feeders and I have already gotton 2 dozen eggs and ALL were VERY GOOD shells....until today?

My Barred rocks just started laying. The first two i got were great eggs and in the nesting box. The next two were below the roost and were both soft shells. Today i got one in the nesting box that was a perfect egg. The first egg i got was a double yolk. I added some oyster shells to the food, i hear its nothing to worry about they are still new layers.

not to worry!

As mnowa28 stated above, it’s very common, and most likely your birds are going through a phase that will pass quickly. I have a RIR in a mixed flock that has just switched over to normally shelled eggs after laying “softies” for a couple of weeks.

Related - those softies are likely to vary in their degree of development. Most of ours were normal other than missing the hard shell. We ate them and they were fine.
