Got a high ratio of wrongly sexed birds from Mt Healthy...anyone else?

The accuracy of sex chicks is 90% if you buy directly from the hatchery. But at a Feed Store there are more factors to consider. I have seen at TSC kids handling the chick and putting them back in other bins. This past spring I saw children taking chick from the straight run bin and putting them back in the pullets bins.

The same I also saw a kid accidentally hitting some boxes by the chick bins that fell on the baby chicks that were peacefully sleeping.

I also read in another thread in this forum even employees took the chicks out of the hatchery boxes and placed them carelessly in any chicks brooder mixing pullets with straight run and even cornish cross.

Buying from a Feed Store has it advantages and disadvantages. Not all hatchery fault.

What i am curious about is if the Hatcheries have their own chickens that they get their eggs from or do they have the eggs delivered to them to incubate and then sell them.

Besides all that, you may be choosing from what was already picked over by other buyers and left a high percentage of roos for the latecomers. I doubt Mt. Heathy sent straight run to a feed store, but I DO think the go getters get there early and pick the pullets out of the bunch and leave the roos for the casual shoppers.

I ordered from Mt Healthy thru are local feed store. They only order from them. Out of my order of 25 pullets I got 2 roosters but I was hoping for that so am happy. Like others have said most of the time going to TSC they do not sex the birds at all even though ther say pullets it is not.

Patience on the egg and bird size. My BO's eggs kept getting bigger. Alot of people prize the pullet eggs. My dad's eyes light up if he knows I am getting pullet eggs. Must be an old wives tale. My birds just turned three and I don't remeber when the eggs increased in size but like you I thought wow these are small. I wasn't disappointed for long. The birds filled out and so did the eggs.
