Got a Knock on the Door Today...

If this is all about the landlord and the condition of the home perhaps you could offer to sign a statement that you are satified with the condition of the home, and the landlords response when repairs(or such things) need to be done. Around here rentals are inspected prior to a home being rented,or if a renter contacted the city to complain.

You could always cite the 7 day notice and just tell them to reschedule,or simply say," Now is not a good time lets reschedule for a time that is good for both of us." Chances are they will say,''It'll just take a minute." to which you just repeat the previous if you really don't want them in.

Best wishes whatever you decide to do!

Well, I did it. I let him in. Inspection took all of 10 minutes or less, and the only thing he found wrong was that we have no vent for the stove. Guess I was worried for nothing..

Oh, and by the way, I never said anything about shooting a city official...

I wish I read this earlier. I had a simular experience, only it was fake. everything sounded legit, even the paperwork he let me glance at.he didnt have credencials with him, and I refused to comply. just because you are a renter, unless you have written paperwork along with all the bells and whistles on paper to investigage, dont do it. they were never able to trace down the creep whom tried very hard to get into my home, including asking me to lock my protective dogs in tje backyard.

and I think they have to notify the owners first, in writing? what would habe happened if you werent home to get the message? or if an older child were the only one home? what mixed messages are we sending to kids of safety if we ourselves fall for foolishness in trusting? do you know for sure that this was legit? did they give you paperwork? can you google or check to make sure that contacts on paperwork match the authentoc site?

Is it the town lister coming to do an appraisal? That's the only person in my town who is allowed to come on the property.

Property tax appraisers an safety inspectors are not immune to the constitutions. Nether have the right to enter your home without a warrant or your consent. Nor can they punish you in any way for refusing them entry.

It's different than a property appraisal. Some cities require rentals to be safety-inspected occasionally.

Yeah, I've heard of this.
A long time ago I worked with a woman who lived in a big apt complex, with a lot of subsidized housing. I think it was twice a year, all the apt were inspected. There was no choice, you either allowed the inspection, or received a 20 day notice to vacate, then it was inspected. Was not an issue for her, and she usually got several weeks notice.
