Got a Second Ferret...Need Name Help! Photos Added!

redhen, they are like freakin' Pringles! They are so awesome you have to have more!

In answer to the questions:
Can you play with them? Heck yes you can! You can also let them play with your dogs (under supervision of course!) and sometimes cats. You can even train them, but we haven't mastered that art yet...figure on our eventual 3rd and 4th ferrets we'll get that down at some point.

Do they stink bad? Honestly? Nope. If you purchase from say, a PetCo, or similar store, the ferrets are sold neutered/spayed and descented. There's still a "slight" musk, but honestly, it's just a "pet" smell. No moreso than a dog. And MUCH less than a cat. We may cheat though, we have one of those automatic-spray air fresheners on top of the cage. But our apartment managers had no idea we even had a ferret and he was 2 feet away from the cage and looking inside of it before he realized it.

Do they piss everywhere in your house when they are out of the cage? Actually, it's fairly easy to train the ferret to use a litter box. You have to use a litter that won't stick to their rears as they, um, wipe themselves on the material. We use something similar to crushed up egg cartons. Seems to get the job done. They do like to tunnel in it sometimes though, so have a shop-vac handy.

If you let them out of the cage... do they go back into the cage on their own? They will come and go in and out of it. Most of the time they'll curl up underneath your couch to take a power nap. They do love their hammocks though...

Or do you have to have a ferret hunt and catch every day? There's a secret way to get them to come to you. You know those annoying squeaky toys? Squeak it endlessly and they will come running (unless they are asleep under the aforementioned couch). Give a treat when they get there or play with them with the squeaky, catch them up and you're good to go!

OOh and do the bite? I'll admit it. Some do. You can train them not to though. BUT, I do not choose the kits that:
Are ridiculously rambunctious, bite (and HARD) or try to get away as soon as you pick them up. I like the kits that sit in your hand calmly, then can begin to squirm to investigate. As it's investigating, it may use a nibble to see what's up, but they should not bite hard. Don't go for color first...let the personality envelop you and be the deciding factor!

I am FAR from an expert on this as we've only had our ferret about a year and she is so chillaxed....this second one is gonna be another learning curve for us!

I would absolutely LOVE to have a ferret but until they are legal DH won't go for it. I actually had a lady come in to my work (CVS) a couple weeks ago with one in her hoodie. It had a leash and harness but was totally happy just chilling in her hood.

I had ferrets for years, they truly are great great pets! BUT and a BIG but. They are expensive pets(and I don't mean initial cost). They are very prone to bovvel obstructions, and its basically a matter of vvhen they get adreno(sp?) gland disease not if.

OP, Our past ferrest names vvere, VVendel, Ferris and Pippen! The only thing better than a ferret is more ferrets!

I know this is an old thread but did you pick a name for your new ferret. I love my DS's we had 2 one passed a way now we just have moonshine. I found him in the middle of the road just before a big snow storm. He is so hyper. He loves to chase the dogs and he has no fear.

Actually yes! We decided on Gander!

And I finally did watch Top Gun!!!

Not the best movie ever, but not the worst either. Ferrets are just awesome little buggers! Do you have any photos of your rescued ferret?

That's such a cute name for a cute boy

Ferrets are very cool animals & don't you just love watching them scamper around. We lost ours 2 yrs ago in April. His name was Jake Plummer & he was an old guy by that time, but he still played & acted like he did when I first got him.

Enjoy your new ferret. They are definitely a one of a kind pet. We had a wonderful ferret named Swiper for 8 glorious years before she passed away just two weeks ago. One day we'll have more, I just love them. I have a friend that at one time had 7 of these little thieves. I think he was on something. LOL Enjoy Goose and Gander.

I know alittle late, but wanted to chine in alittle on the smell. They do stink, and definately worse then a dog or cat. If you keep their cage clean, it's not to bad, but it's one of those things you have to deside if you can live w/. And the places they are aloud to spend the most time will also smell, it's alittle more challanging to keep the smell down when they get to run around the house (but they are so much more fun when you can let them out).

I've had three, started w/ a dark eyed white female that was deaf (I wanted an albino male, and ended up w/ a dark eyed female). She was so small and homely when I got her, but I was crazy about her! I couldn't call her or use the squeaky toy to get her attention because obviously she couldn't hear it. But one time I left the house for a few minutes and came back to find my door open, there she was flying across the yard, I ran after, but she was already across the fence and if I had to go around I'm not sure I'd have been able to find her, but she saw me and came running back practically jumping in my hands (maybe she was out there looking for me!). Her best friend was a cat (cats was part of the reason I wanted a boy, figured they'd be bigger and less food like, apparently that wasn't a problem), he'd wait for me to let her out, and if she didn't wake up right away he'd scruff her and pull her out, sometimes he'd climb in and get in her hammock. She was easy to potty train, and always used her litter box, and if she ever got alittle rough w/ her teeth (sometimes she liked to chase my toes) I'd scruff her and she'd lighten up. I think if you nip any biting right from the start it won't be a problem.

Then I got two boys, they were 6 and 11 months old when I got them, they'd been living in a small cage, don't know if this had anything to do w/ it, but I could not get them potty trained, they refused to use the litter box. I had a large 3 story cage and in the end they're favorite place to poop was half way down the bottom stairs, it was impossible to put something down their to catch it. I considered rehoming them, but Breeze had gotten so attached I couldn't do it. So they got moved to the garage. After I lost Breeze, as much as I liked the boys, she was just special and my heart wasn't in it, so I found them a new home (with a major ferret lover! I heard the younger one passed away, but the other one is still alive and well). I gave her my cage to, so I can't be tempted.

If it wasn't for the smell I would have another in a heart beat!
