Got Flogged by A rooster tonight

I have a Plymouth Barred Rock rooster who got aggressive when I tried to move a hen who had gotten into the wrong pen back into her pen. He came at me in full attack-mode, but I calmly put my hand on his back and held him down for a few seconds. Since then, none of the roosters (we have 3) have made any move to be aggressive towards me when I am in their pen. They get riled up if we have an escapee hen, but quickly calm down when I return the hen to their pen. They seem to know that I am the "dominant" being in our barnyard. We also have a shepherd-mix dog who won't back down when we need help corralling the chickens, and they respect her just as much!

Parson's Wife :

uhmmm, best wishes...but I'm thinking you will be serving chicken n' dumplings next week, or the one after...

Events have unfolded that we don't need to consider that yet.

See you are in tune enough with your birds where this is all it took and then guess what.............. things work out so easy. You should be happy there is a Ying & Yang in your coop.

Beautiful Rooster. Thanks for the advice. I have a RIR roo that has decided lately to be ugly. I am going to show him. For anyone thinking I mean harm I do not mean that.

I think it's a viable comment.......... putting it this way, women tend to project that nurturing quiet way about caring for the birds. While doing chores they may of course

talk to them, hold them, pet them, name them, that kind thing that the rooster views not as acceptance but that your one of his hen's. yes the girls may get flogged more than the guy's, because most of the guy's don't practice that behavior towards chickens, I know I don't and won't........... it's just not my thing.
So the answer to your question is yes it can make a difference, but is not the diffinitive reason why rooster get cocky.

A bunch LOL as you can tell by all my feed barrels hehehehe.
