Got Flogged by A rooster tonight

If I were to treat my neighbor like you suggest treating the aggressive rooster, then I could be arrested and charged with battery so "assault and battery" statement is not so over the top.

As the roo initiated an unprovoked attack at Al before the alleged assault in return, any court in the land would acquit him on the charges by claiming that he was justified in defending himself to the best of his ability.

Seriously? These aren't humans with whom you can sit down with and reason quietly. They aren't humans at all...they are chickens. They understand aggression on one level...theirs. If you were calmly going about your business in your multiple, scientifically observed pens of chickens and someone chose to attack you from behind on your own property, more power to you for holding them in your arms until he is embarassed in front of the other species in your pens.

Scientific process starts with anecdotal results....that is why someone decides to do the controlled experiment in the first place, in order to see if the results are consistent under controlled, measurable circumstances. Me? If the anecdotal method works with 100% efficacy at my place and requires minimal effort and time, I'm quite satisfied with both the method and the result.

You are free to scientifically interact with your livestock as you see fit....I'll continue to be able to enjoy walking in my yard without worrying about the feather duster with 3 in. spikes trying to dust off my pant legs.

I have no experience with oriental games but American games typically do not attack people, in my experience with a good many of them. Cocks that is, a broody game hen can be a terror.

I guess I'm doing something right, I've never been beat up by a rooster and never had to beat one of them up either.

When I was a teen my Mom had a game rooster. Guess who he always wanted to go after. ME. I will NOT have that in my pen. I love my roosters, as I love all my chooks. But I will not hesitate to "woman-fight" them if necessary at his level. In a way he understands. Even if it means "to the death" as it sometimes happens in the chicken world. I have done all I can to prevent that happening, by doing things to them that an Alpha roo would, and letting them know I am boss. So far, no fight. They are sweet. I can "love" my roos in several way. Alive, or fried, grilled, or roasted! YUM YUM! Mean rooster tastes best.

Got one now that I'm thinking of stewing & one for roasting!! The stewing one thinks he boss..He won't attack my wife but if I turn my back on him for 2secs. It's on!!! Only thing is, he is 3yrs old & VERY LEAN!! Hence, chicken stew..lol.

The other one is only 5 months old. He doesn't attack us but my poor ducks get ridden by him every day. Wouldn't be so bad but this chicken likes to ride the male duck..lol. He is Barred rock poor duck is a 4mo. mallard & a third of his size..If he keeps on my mallard, I'll give the mallard a taste of roast chicken soon.

Off topic for 1 second LOL...... couponsaver !! that shore is one cute BABY in your avatar, cuter than a pale full of kittens. If it is yours congrats.

I've got a 4 month OE Bantam Roo that has charged me a few times and charged my daughter also. He's a little Roo with an attitude. I'm not scared of him but all occasions when he did charge me I had flip flops and shorts on. After his last attempt to challenge me, I made sure I was fully clothed and gloved, I went out into the run, picked him up and held him till he quit squirming, then tucked him under my arm......all done in front of the ladies!! He has started to show his manliness again, especially if I enter the coop in the morning when the ladies are laying. Normally we get the eggs from the back hatch but every now and then I like to go in to collect and inspect. The little stinker will play a game with me.....Open door, act like I'm going in, he charges toward the door, I pull it shut, he backs off, I open, he charges, I close, he backs off. He does not like anyone in there when the girls are. Just protecting and doing his job but I don't want him going after my kids or anyone else when they're free ranging neither. I think we are going to have to have another Boss & Roo intervention!!

I've been reading everyone's idea on how to handle a mean roo....started reading about chickens long before I got chickens...while I am fully prepared to chase a roo, boot a roo and hang a roo upside down (if I can catch it)....Forwarned is forearmed....and ya'll warned me....so the very first time my roo lifted his feathers toward me I walked toward him in a menancing way. Now I just look at him and he backs down. But I am ever on the alert for the first sign of agression, which I then nip in the bud.

Thank you all for your postings regarding dealing with roos....like I said Forewarned is forearmed and I was ARMED with a lot of good info....

So it appears the holding and humiliating idea wasn't all that is was cracked up to be. so what are your plans now that he is reverting back to his old tricks. Doing his job and protecting the ladies doesn't include attacking the one who protects him and the real protector of the ladies............. that would be you by the way !!!. You have a problem that's for sure so are you happy with your half hearted attempts at correction, remember you got kid's. I really hope you can get this handle for your peace of mind and safety, perhaps reading some of this thread will help, we are in the don't coddle a nasty Rooster club LOL.
