If I were to treat my neighbor like you suggest treating the aggressive rooster, then I could be arrested and charged with battery so "assault and battery" statement is not so over the top.
As the roo initiated an unprovoked attack at Al before the alleged assault in return, any court in the land would acquit him on the charges by claiming that he was justified in defending himself to the best of his ability.
Seriously? These aren't humans with whom you can sit down with and reason quietly. They aren't humans at all...they are chickens. They understand aggression on one level...theirs. If you were calmly going about your business in your multiple, scientifically observed pens of chickens and someone chose to attack you from behind on your own property, more power to you for holding them in your arms until he is embarassed in front of the other species in your pens.
Scientific process starts with anecdotal results....that is why someone decides to do the controlled experiment in the first place, in order to see if the results are consistent under controlled, measurable circumstances. Me? If the anecdotal method works with 100% efficacy at my place and requires minimal effort and time, I'm quite satisfied with both the method and the result.
You are free to scientifically interact with your livestock as you see fit....I'll continue to be able to enjoy walking in my yard without worrying about the feather duster with 3 in. spikes trying to dust off my pant legs.
