Got Flogged by A rooster tonight

You might want to back up and read this whole thread....no need to kill your roo if you try some of these proven methods of correction. One time he attacks, shame on him. Twice he attacks, shame on you. Going back in and provoking him is not as effective as seizing the moment at the time he actually attacks so the lesson provided will be connected to his bad behaviors and actually teach him something.

My dog got attacked today!

Well, not like she didn't deserve it, chasing the hens any chance she gets. But she wasn't chasing today. I had her tied to a post while I was working in the yard when Big Red (RIR) nailed her. Well I wasn't having any of that! I chased HIM around the yard until I got a couple of kicks in. He didn't come back to bother either of us the rest of the day.

But still I was laughing inside, what with a chicken taking on a dog, and winning at that!

Well we ended up with two roos, just NOT the roo from He**, but the one that my son kept saying was a pullet turned out being a roo too. He attacked my son the other day, just out of the blue, so I decided that both roos will go.

After the last few days of putting up with their crap, even my girls are sick, sick, sick of them both, we took the long handle fish net and caught one (the Mean Ole SOB) first and put him in the big dog crate. Tried to get the other one, but he got out of the run and took off up the hill toward the train tracks, he was all up in the kudzu so we could not get to him at all, so we just had to wait it out. Came down to the time that we had to leave to take our son to church and by the time we returned it was dark out so they were roosting, sort of. Our dusk to dawn light was recently fixed, so it shines right near the coop, but is not bright enough to keep them awake.

We found the other roo, at one point he was walking down the street

and I thought, 'let him keep on a walking'

but then I thought, 'no better not, he may cause an accident.'

So got him back up in the yard and my son chased him to an open (smallish) tote box and he went in there and I just placed the big fish net over the top and carried him and the tote over to the dog crate where the other roo was already.

Now they are both in the crate with a waterer hooked to the side. I will be calling a local guy that does meat processing. Not sure that he actually will cull the two of them, but I will find out tomorrow. If not, we will be back to square one. This crate is so large it is sitting up on it's back side now with the front door on top, so I cannot get my arm down in there (with gloves on) and get to them, but we can flip it onto its bottom (where the pan is) and open up the whole top, but then I am worried that one of them will take off and then we have to do the chicken chase again.

finally got flogged my first time thought it was funny.......a friend came over and we was sitting on my bench and i was going to try to catch my americauna cockerel during the middle of is crow he darted then came back and thumped my ankle

Well, there's LOTS of opinions on what to do with a rooster that attacks. From killing them, to practically drowning them, to staring them down, to drop-kicking them, holding them, embarassing them......I guess I will try holding him down (not sure if I can if he comes at me like he did) and trying to intimidate him with "the look" and a stick....act like another rooster I guess. My slightly over a year Rhode Island Red rooster, Red, probably weighs 12 pounds. He has always been good around me and now this little stinker attacks me. Thought about putting Red in with Jack to teach him a lesson but I will try to do the job myself.
