We got extremely lucky today. My wife was standing at our backdoor watching the hens in the backyard. (They free range in the yard during the day.) Eunice saw my wife and ran towards her expecting a treat. Instead, she got bombed by a hawk!
She ran in circles as my wife ran out to intercede. She was able to rescue Eunice with no injuries. Eunice ran up to the patio and hid under our small couch. Here she is (left) being consoled by Gertrude.
My wife said it all happened SO fast. Had she not been at the backyard, we're pretty sure we wouldn't have Eunice in our flock anymore. We're going to play it safe and keep everyone in the their coop / run for a few days... perhaps longer since migration season is coming.
So, this means that my coop design has changed a bit now. I've been planning on building a bigger coop and run this fall... but we're now planning on building an extension off the end for a covered / protected area so that the girls have plenty of room to roam.
