Last week I moved 6 young birds into a loft section with a settling cage. All has been fine for a week or so. Today when I came home from training dogs there were two pigeons flying around the backyard. What the heck? Checked the settling cage (should have done that before) and discovered that one corner has come loose. This loft consists of 2 flying sections and a breeding section. I opened the bobs of one flying section, and within an hour the birds had trapped. Hawks are still bad here so I dodged a bullet on this one. It will be another 2 weeks or so before I start flying them.

That is good news Sourland!
Glad to hear luck was on your side.

I have been free flying a young squeaker the last week or so. She has been trapping well and stretching her wings with the adult birds. I brought her on her first toss and everything went fine also only about 2 miles from home.

Great luck!

I always get nervous when my your birds are taking their first flight around outside the loft. They are so clumsy and I always worry one may have an accident - like falling into my pond.

They are also funny to watch as they learn what they can and can not land on - like when they try to land on a steep roof, and keep flapping trying to hold on, or when they attempt to hang onto a thin twiggy branch on a tree, and sway back and forth, not daring to let go lol.
