Got my bator, some questions.

i got mine at walmart, it is called the springfield thermomoter/hydrometer. for around 8 bucks here.

i have a sponge in mine, it just makes it easier than having to mvoe eggs to fill up the bottom resevoir. but thats just my opinion.

Walmart has the Accurite thermometer - it's only about 7 bucks - it's the second cheapest one they have - the cheapest one you have to hit a button to get 24 hour highs and lows, I think, so I got the accurite. At our Walmart it was back by lightbulbs and electronics.

If ya read back on his thread, it has a whole few pages on sponges vs. reservoirs, and what he finally did (and what I do - I even had a pic of my hatcher). I don't like the reservoirs, myself, hard to fill with eggs in the bator, and easy to overfill and spill over onto whatever table it is sitting on.

You can take out a plug or two while incubating (first 18 days) if your humidity is too high - it'll let some of the moisture out. It also lets some of the heat out, though. Usually I leave both in and take one out if the humidity gets a bit high - then come back in a half hour or hour and if it's down I put the plug right back in.

Last night at bedtime I had 8 pips out of 19 eggs - this morning I have 4 chicks, and 5 pips, and this is only day 21. I think I'm gonna have a great hatch this time.

hey meri, i thank ya.
but check the kentucky people thread.
got some questions for ya there and soem pics of my flock, my new additions , that is.

okay; my temp jumped t oas high as 102, will this kill my eggs?
and it dropped to as low as 98, will this kill them?
i think i have evened it out now, but i have been so stressed over it, that i forgot to turn them last night. but i did turn them twice before.

please repsond.

When I first got my LG still air bator, the temp would always go between 97-102. I still had +85% hatches

A temp swing between 98 and 102 is normal, a bit higher or lower won't hurt them either, if it is not at either extreme for too long.

OKAY! Great thanks..
I think this is truly the KY incubators forum. Haha.

anyways;

when should i candle, and when i do, at day 5, what should i see if the egg is good?

I wouldn't candle at day 5, it would be very difficult to see anything unless you know what to look for, and even then it is still hard. Wait to candle until at least day 7, then you should see veins. Most people don't candle for the first time till day 10, and by then you should definitely be able to see veining, unless the eggs are brown or green/blue. Those are harder to see through unless you have a really good candler. But you should still wait till day 14 before tossing any. The best times to candle are days 10, 14, and 18. Too much movement/jarring from candling can cause the embryo to die.
