Thanks very much for sharing. You just made the wait for my new babies more bearable. Just 13 more days!

And prayers sent for your father-in-law.

Thanks everyone

I'm having so much fun with them! When we aren't at the hospital, I'm sitting by the brooder

Skitz, it's a Canon PowerShotSX100 IS. It's a middle-of-the-line camera that's a few years old, but I love the macro setting!!

Morri, I know all about chick fever and how hard that wait is!

Good luck with your hatching and keep us updated! And of course we'll NEED pics!

Serrin, thanks for the advice. I actually tried that at first, but they get the water so dirty so often that it seems like I'm pouring out the trough every 30 min to let clean water in...of course the marbles fall out everywhere and keep most of the food particles from coming out. Believe me though, I've been keeping a very good eye on them

So far they've only been hot-tubing - there have been no suicide-drowning attempts yet!! But please let me know if you know of a good way to remedy the marble situation! I know it's always better to be safe than sorry, but so far the marbles have just caused more of a mess for me than anything...

BigSkyChickens, keep us updated on your brood as well and don't forget the pics!!!

Thanks again to everyone for the sweet comments and Happy Chick Season!!!

My chicks kept fouling (no pun intended!) the water as well. I raised the water dish off of the ground. At first with a saucer so they could still reach it and as they have gotten bigger I have a small clay flower pot upside down and the waterer sits right on top of it. Now I don't have to empty all of the shavings that they kept kicking in there when they would suddenly all feel the need to scratch and kick at the same time.

Faith's Chicks has pretty much the best advice on keeping the water dish clean. I hear ya on the dilemma though. I've gone through H.E. Double Toothpicks trying to keep my little mongrel hordes out of the water dish, along with everything they delight in kicking into it.

To clean out all of the shavings I had to resort to flushing it in the kitchen sink (be sure to have the strainer in place or you'll soon have a clogged sink to add to you list of grievances!

) which usually did a good job of getting most of it out. But I'd usually have to pick the rocks out one at a time and rinse them off to get rid of all of the debris. The starter scratch in the bottom was the worst of the mess to be honest.

Since the food dish sits right next to the water dish, these little hooligans have made it their mission in life to see just how much of the food they can kick out of the food dish and then kick up into the water dish! Thankfully mine are at the two week age now and I could stop using the rocks about 3 days ago!! Mostly this is a precaution for chicks when they're a week or less old. So, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and NO, it's not a train coming the other way!!

Good luck with all of them. Keep the pictures coming. We all love to watch them grow up, even when we have our own little mob to deal with! It's always fun to see other people's chicks!

That pic was my favorite - now I want a Seabright or two of my own!

Thanks for sharing, mlowarren! Please post more!

Edited to say - I will definitely pray for your father-in-law and I'm sorry you guys have to go through such a thing! Tell your father-in-law that he is in my thoughts and prayers along with the rest of your family.

Faith's Chicks, that is a great idea! I actually already have my adult chickens' water raised on a cinderblock, and it stays wayyy cleaner than it ever did before. I'll have to try it with the chicks' water though! I'm sure I have a clay saucer around here somewhere....

Serrin, sounds like you spend a lot of time cleaning out your chicks' waterer...sounds familar!!!

Where are the pics of your brood??

Thanks sarahsark! And yes, the Seabrights are probably my favorite right now
